Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH) - Cleveland Indians catcher Roberto Perez will join his Tribe teammate Michael Brantley in a Lake County Captains uniform tonight at Classic Park. The Indians announced Sunday that Brantley would continue his rehab assignment with the Captains in Wednesday night's game and now it has been made official that Perez, who is returning from surgery to repair a fractured thumb, will also suit up with Lake County in this evening's game against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at 7:00 PM.
Perez, 27, made his Major League debut with the Indians in July of 2014 and played his first full big league season last year. Perez spent the entire 2015 season with the Indians as the primary backup for starting catcher Yan Gomes, except for a six-week period when Gomes was injured and Perez filled in as the club's starting backstop. Though he was not a regular starter, Perez was tied for sixth among American League catchers in walks (33).
Perez played in four games with the Indians this year before suffering a fractured thumb injury on April 30 in Philadelphia. Despite going 0-for-8 at the plate before the injury, Perez worked six walks and only struck out twice.
Perez was drafted by the Indians in the 33rd round of the 2008 MLB Draft out of Lake City Community College (now Florida Gateway College). He played the entire 2010 season with the Captains and helped lead Lake County to the Midwest League title under manager Ted Kubiak. Perez earned MWL All-Star honors, batting .217 with six home runs and 38 RBI. He threw out 40 percent of would-be base-stealers.
