
Stellar Pitching Leads Rox To 3-1 Opening Night Win

Brockton, Mass. - RHP *Mike Smith *threw five scoreless innings and 1B *Melvin Falu *drove in two runs to lead the Brockton Rox to a victory on Opening Night, 3-1, over the Worcester Tornadoes on Thursday evening at Campanelli Stadium.
Worcester had the first threat of the game in the second inning when they loaded the bases with two outs on two singles and a hit by pitch. Smith was able to force SS Boomer Blanchard to groundout to shortstop to strand all three runners.
The Rox (1-0) got themselves on the board in the second inning on a one-out solo home run by C *Chris Grossman*. They doubled their lead in the third when SS *Dominic Ramos* led off with a single and was sacrificed to second base by CF *Chris Valencia*. Then Falu followed with his second single of the day to score Ramos.
The Tornadoes (0-1) scored their run in the top of the fifth off of Smith on a two-out double from LF Alex Nunez
Falu added a second RBI single in the fifth inning, which also scored Ramos, who had doubled with one out.
RHP *Colin Lynch* was the first out of the bullpen for the Rox, and he delivered two perfect frames with one strikeout. RHP *Jake Hale* made his debut in the eighth inning and stranded a pair of runners on base, while RHP *Travis Hughes* picked up his first save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Smith (1-0) earned the victory by throwing only 73 pitches, allowing just the one run on five hits with no walks and no strikeouts.
LHP Zach Zuercher (0-1) suffered the loss for the Tornadoes as he went 5.1 innings. All three runs against him were earned, and he gave up nine hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out four.
RHP J.J. Pacella and RHP Kevin Cooper combined for 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for Worcester.
The Rox were led at the top of the order by Ramos, as he went 2-for-4 on the day with two runs scored. Falu finished 3-for-4, driving in two of the three Brockton runs
DH Nick Salotti was the only man to reach base twice for the Tornadoes, registering a single and a double.
Game two of this four-game series is slated for Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at Campanelli Stadium. LHP *Mark Rosen* makes his debut for Brockton against Worcester RHP Matt Smith.
