New Jersey Jackals News Release
Pittsfield, Mass. - Southpaw Isaac Pavlik struck out 10 batters and second baseman Argenis Reyes went 4-for-5 with three RBIs as the Jackals defeated the Pittsfield Colonials, 8-4, in Thursday night's season opener at Wahconah Park.
Pavlik (1-0) allowed a run in the bottom of the first inning, but followed it up with five shutout frames as he went six innings and allowed just one run on six hits to earn the victory.
Trailing 1-0, New Jersey erupted for five runs in the top of the second inning against Pittsfield starter Chad Paronto (0-1), who took the loss. Designated hitter Mike Jones got the Jackals on the board with a towering two-run home run. After an RBI fielders' choice off the bat of Chris White made it 3-1, a two-run double by Reyes extended the New Jersey lead to 5-1. A Reyes RBI triple off the base of the centerfield wall highlighted a three-run seventh inning, which helped the Jackals build an 8-1 lead.
Pittsfield tacked on a run in the eighth on a Scott Knazek home run off Jared Locke before plating a pair of runs in the ninth against Bobby Gagg.
The Jackals and Colonials continue their three-game series on Friday at 7 p.m. at Wahconah Park when New Jersey sends southpaw James Leverton to the mound against Pittsfield southpaw Dave Qualben. Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
Jackal Bites: The win was New Jersey's ninth on opening night in the past 10 seasons... Argenis Reyes finished a home run shy of a cycle... Isaac Pavlik is now 1.1 innings shy of tying John Kelly's Can-Am League record for career innings pitched... Pavlik threw 68 of 95 pitches for strikes.
