Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Louisville Bats (45-63) got two runs in the ninth inning to comeback and beat the Iowa Cubs (48-60) by a score of 4-3, Thursday at Principal Park.
Louisville got out to an early start scoring two runs in the first inning on an RBI double from Spencer Steer and an RBI ground out from Colin Moran. The two runs is all they would score against Caleb Kilian who registered his longest start of the year.
The righty spun six innings, allowing the two earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six. Iowa tied the game with two runs of their own in the fourth inning on a double from Matt Mervis.
Both sides were held scoreless through the middle innings until David Bote gave Iowa the lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth. The I-Cubs brought the one-run lead to the ninth, but Steer delivered again for the Bats, this time with a two-run home run to put them back in front.
Despite allowing a two-out double in the ninth, Fernando Cruz recorded his International League leading 20th save of the year, recording the final three outs to give Louisville their second win in a row.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Iowa had just their second quality start of the season today with Caleb Kilian throwing six innings of two-run ball. It set a season long start for Kilian and marked just the second time an I-Cubs pitcher spun six innings this year.
- David Bote went 1-for-3 with a solo home run today, marking his second consecutive game with a solo home run for Iowa.
Iowa and Louisville will play game four of the series tomorrow night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:08 PM. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
