Iowa Cubs News Release

IOWA CUBS (48-59) vs. LOUISVILLE BATS (44-63)

Thursday - 12:08 PM - Principal Park - Des Moines, IA

RHP Caleb Kilian (4-1, 3.53) vs. LHP Brandon Williamson (1-3, 4.10)

TODAY'S GAME: With the series tied at one game apiece, Iowa will send righty Caleb Kilian to the mound looking to take the series lead. Kilian enters today's game as the leader in wins (4), starts (17), innings pitched (71.1) and strikeouts (89) for Iowa. His 89 strikeouts are also good for seventh in the International League. The right-hander holds a 4-1 record with a 3.53 ERA through his 17 starts for Iowa, allowing 28 earned runs on 67 hits over 71.1 innings pitched. He has walked 33 batters compared to 89 strikeouts over that span while allowing opponents to hit just .243 against him. On the other side, the Bats will send lefty Brandon Williamson to the mound to make just his seventh start of the year for Louisville. Williamson started the year with Double-A Chattanooga where he went 5-2 with a 4.14 ERA in 14 starts. Since getting promoted to Triple-A, the southpaw has gone 1-3 with a 4.10 ERA in six starts with Louisville, allowing 12 earned runs on 32 hits over 26.1 innings pitched. He has walked 15 batters compared to 24 strikeouts while opponents are hitting .291 against him.

THAT'S MORE LIKE IT: After allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks over just 2.1 innings last time out, Wade Miley looked much better in last night's outing. The southpaw spun 4.2 innings of two-run ball, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out five. Miley threw 68% (45-of-66) of his pitches for strikes and induced seven ground ball outs compared to zero flyouts.

SLUMP-BUSTER: Jared Young gave the I-Cubs their only lead in last night's game with a three-run blast in the sixth inning. It was Young's 15th homer of the year, but his first three-run shot. It was also his first long ball since July 12, breaking a streak of 18 homer-less games. After getting off to a slow start in the second half, the infielder looks to be turning it back on this series. He broke out of a 4-for-46 slump with a multi-hit game in the opener, making him 3-for-6 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, two walks and three RBI in just the first two games against Louisville.

A MATCHUP OF TOP DOGS: Both Caleb Kilian and Brandon Williamson rank among the top prospects in their respective organizations. Kilian comes in as the No. 6 overall ranked prospect in the Cubs system by MLB.com, while Brandon Williamson is the No. 4 overall prospect for the Reds according to the same outlet. Both Kilian and Williamson are the top-rated pitching prospect for each organization, just one step away from the big leagues. Not only is Williamson in the top-five of the Reds organization, but he also comes in at No. 70 in MLB.com's Top-100 prospect list.

BOTE'S BACK: In his second game with Iowa since being optioned to Iowa on August 4, David Bote went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in last night's game. The multi-hit performance gave him five in his last seven games with Iowa dating back to June 18 against Omaha when he recorded four straight multi-hit games. The infielder has played in 20 games with Iowa this year and is hitting .280 (21-for-75) with eight runs scored, six doubles and 13 runs batted in entering today's game.

DOUBLE DOWN: After tying their season high with six doubles in the opener, the I-Cubs kept the trend alive with four more two-baggers in last night's game. Six Iowa players have contributed to that total and three of them have knocked more than one double already. Alfonso Rivas has led the charge with three, and both Narciso Crook and Luis Vazquez have two. With just two games down in the six-game set against Louisville, the I-Cubs have already hit more doubles this week than they hit in eight of their 18 six-game series so far this season.

SAY IT AIN'T SO: After allowing two runs in a tie game in the ninth inning last night, Cam Sanders suffered the loss. It marked his seventh loss of the season with Iowa and his eighth overall. The righty started the year with Double-A Tennessee and went 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in six games with the Smokies. He was promoted to Iowa and has had some bumps along the road. In 16 games with Iowa, Sanders is 1-7 with a 6.27 ERA, allowing 36 earned runs on 44 hits over 51.2 innings. In those 51.2 innings the righty has walked 37 batters compared to 49 strikeouts.

AGAINST LOUISVILLE: After Louisville's comeback win last night, the series is now tied at one game apiece entering game three today. The two teams split the first 12 games of the year, all 12 of them being played at Louisville Slugger Field. Through the first two games at Principal Park in this series they are all square at 1-1, making them 7-7 this year through the first 14 games played. Iowa is two games up all-time against Louisville, going 20-18, while holding an 11-6 record against the Bats here at Principal Park. After dropping last night's game by two runs, the I-Cubs are outscoring Louisville by 11 runs so far through 14 games this season, at 66-55.

SHORT HOPS: Jared Young clubbed his first three-run home run of the year last night, marking his first home run since July 12 against Buffalo here at Principal Park...Iowa dropped to 5-7 when tied after eight innings and 4-7 when tied after eight innings after giving up two runs in the ninth inning to lose last night...the I-Cubs are five games below .500 this year when they do not commit an error, going 25-30.
