NORTH BAY, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads collected 2 points in their first of three games this weekend; ousting the divisional-rival North Bay Battalion on home ice by a score of 4-3. With the win, the Steelheads improved to 7-2-1-0 on the season and now have a 3 point lead over the Wolves and IceDogs for top spot in the OHL's Central Division.
Steelheads netminder, Jake Ingham turned aside 25 of 28 shots in the contest to collect his 6th win of the season through 9 starts. Christian Propp stopped 26 of 30 for the Battalion but skated away with the loss on home ice.
Secondary scoring was the difference for the Steelheads on Thursday night and that started with Richard Whittaker netting his second of the season at 14:41 of the opening stanza. Whittaker jumped on a loose puck at the goal-mouth with the lone assist being credited to Nicholas Canade.
With just 0:08 remaining in the first period, Steelheads captain Cole Carter notched his team-leading 11th of the season to give the Steelheads a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes.
The Battallion fought back early on in the middle frame; scoring two goals in the first 6:30 to tie the game at 2-2. Both of North Bay's second period goals came from veteran forwards - Matthew Struthers and captain Justin Brazeau.
It didn't take long for the Fish to respond as just 1:21 later Ryan Barbosa scored his first as a member of the Steelheads - taking a pass from Ryan McLeod and beating Propp with a shot off the rush to give his team a 3-2 lead.
The flurry of second period goals continued with Brandon Coe responding for the Battalion on the powerplay to tie things up at 3's before Adam Varga would notch the eventual game-winning goal late in the frame. Cole Schwindt and Michael Little would draw the assists on Varga's first of the season.
The Steelheads are back in action on Friday night with the League-leading Peterborough Petes (8-2-0-0) in town for the first time this season. Then, on Sunday afternoon the 67's visit the Paramount Fine Foods Centre to round out the weekend's action for the Steelheads. Tickets for both games are on sale now at the PFFC Box Office and online via Ticketmaster.
