Brampton Steelheads News Release

MISSISSAUGA, ON - Coming off of a Thursday night defeat at the hands of the Niagara IceDogs, the Mississauga Steelheads headed to the Western Conference on Friday night looking to get back into the win column. Standing in their way would be former Steelhead Dawson Carty and the Kitchener Rangers, coming off of a loss of their own.

Cameron Zanussi would get the start between the pipes for Mississauga, and would be tested early by the hometown Rangers; however "Zeus" was more than up to the task as he turned away some early Kitchener pressure. Despite a slow start on the shot clock, Mississauga would be the first to take advantage of a scoring opportunity as Stephen Gibson's blast would beat Carty at 8:29 of the opening period. The Kitchener-born and raised defenseman's second of the season was assisted by Jimmy Lodge and Bobby MacIntyre and stood as the only marker of the period, despite great chances by both teams. It was a positive opening period for Zanussi, who turned away all 7 Kitchener shots while Carty stopped 12 of the 13 Trout shots on net.

The second period would start very similar to the first, as Kitchener went on the offensive. Despite the early onslaught, Zeus would stand strong and receive support from his defensive corps in minimizing Kitchener's chances. Frustration would boil over shortly after, as Adam Donnelly and Mason Kohn dropped the gloves at the 4:01 mark of the period. Looking to utilize the spark from a Donnelly win Sean Day came close to extending the Steelheads lead on a Trout power play, however the puck hopped over his stick to keep the game within one goal. Kitchener would finally find their tying marker at 12:10 of the 2nd as Brandon Robinson scored his 19th of the season. Mississauga would be quick to respond however, as a Mason Kohn slew foot would give the Trout a five-minute advantage. The Trout would strike twice on the PP; first it was Michael McLeod tipping home a Jared Walsh with Day also picking up an assist, then it would be Brandon Devlin letting one go from the blue line with Bobby MacIntyre and Everett Clark supplying the helpers. Lodge would nearly make it a 4-1 game before the end of the period; however the Rangers would escape the period only behind 2 goals.

A late scrum in the second would put the Rangers on the power play to open the third period, and the Rangers took advantage immediately. Just 36 seconds into the period, Robinson scored his second of the game. With the Steelheads heading back to the box shortly after the first marker, Robinson would complete the hat trick at 3:44 of the period, tying the game for the Rangers. More penalty trouble for the Trout would see Darby Llewellyn give Kitchener their first lead at 5:29 of the third, and the Rangers would continue to roll, scoring two more before the midway point of the period. The five-goal outburst in the first half of the frame would seal the deal for Kitchener, as the home team picked up a 6-3 victory.

The Steelheads will return to home on Monday for a Family Day Matinee against Connor McDavid, Dylan Strome and the Erie Otters. The game is completely sold out, however a number of seats are still available for Friday night's matchup against the Kingston Frontenacs, and Sunday's Pink at the Rink contest against the Guelph Storm.
