Spirit End Home Stretch With Loss to Colts

The Barrie Colts travelled to the Dow Event Center on Saturday night as the Saginaw Spirit finished their lengthy home stretch against their Eastern Conference rival with a 6-4 loss to the Colts.

The Saginaw Spirit and Barrie Colts recorded a fast paced first period, with both teams showing off some impressive offensive flair. The first period only saw one goal, which was recorded by Saginaw's Tye Felhaber. Artem Artemov set up a nice pass to Felhaber who put in a one-timer and his 14th goal of the season at 7:16 of the period, putting the Spirit ahead of the Colts 1-0. The Colts dominated shots on goal during the first period, putting 18 shots on Saginaw's starting goaltender David Ovsjannikov in comparison to the Spirit's 10 shots on net.

Saginaw's leading goal scorer Dylan Sadowy was able to cushion the Spirit score 27 seconds into the period on a power play goal, allowing Saginaw to jump to a 2-0 lead over the Colts early in the second. Sadowy netted his 34th goal of the season with the help of Mitchell Stephens and Tye Felhaber. Towards the later end of the period Saginaw put the penalty kill unit to the test after Jake Ringuette was called on a tripping penalty. The Barrie Colts capitalized on the man advantage and were able to put up a tally to cut the Spirit lead in half after Brendan Lemieux netted a power play goal at 16:53 of the period. Assists on the play were credited to Joseph Blandisi and Andrew Mangiapane. Shots on goal during the second period favored the visiting team 14-7.

The Saginaw Spirit and Barrie Colts kicked up the energy in the third and final period, with Barrie tallying five goals and Saginaw tallying two. The Colts netted three goals within the first five minutes of the third with the tallies coming from Kevin Lebanc, Andrew Mangiapane and Michael Webster. Saginaw put a quick stop to the Colts scoring party after Devon Paliani put the score to 4-3 at 5:58 of the period with the help of Troy Henley and Michael Holmes. Paliani recorded his 7th goal of the season against the Colts. Mitchell Stephens followed suit and joined the Saginaw scoring party when he netted his 19th goal of the season unassisted at 7:24 to tie the game 4-4. As the end of the period drew near the Colts broke the tie and pulled ahead of the Spirit as Brandon Prophet scored at the 15:16 mark. Andrew Mangiapane and Joseph Blandisi took the assists on the goal that put the score to 5-4 in favor of the Colts. Saginaw pulled goaltender David Ovsjannikov towards the last few seconds of the period in hopes of tying the score yet again, but were unsuccessful in the attempt. Barrie's Joseph Blandisi was able to slide one into Saginaw's empty net, which gave way to a 6-4 win for the Colts. Final shots on goal read Barrie 43, Saginaw 23.

The Saginaw Spirit will see four road games before returning to the Dow Event Center on February 27th as they play host to the Ottawa 67's. The Spirit will head to the Budweiser Gardens first as they take the ice against the London Knights on Monday, February 16th at 2:00 p.m. That game can be heard on AM790 WSGW. Friday Saginaw will play at Ottawa, followed by Belleville on Saturday and Kingston on Sunday. These games can be heard on FM Talk and Sports WSGW 100.5.
