Brampton Steelheads News Release

Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads got their first taste of the OHL's Western Conference as they took on the Sarnia Sting Sunday afternoon at the Hershey Centre. Sarnia came out strong, maintaining possession and swarming the Steelheads net, but Spencer Martin stood tall in net to keep the game scoreless early on. Sarnia would open the scoring as Jakob Chychrun netted his first goal of his OHL career beating Spencer Martin blocker side on a shorthanded rush. The Steelheads were quick to answer as Bobby MacIntyre scored his first of the season to tie the game at 1. Sean Day and Brandon Devlin drew the assists on MacIntyre's powerplay marker.

The second period started off much like the first, with limited scoring chances at both ends. Sarnia once again broke the tie mid-way through the period, as Chychrun scored his second goal of the game off a one timer set up by teammates Joshua Chapman and Daniel Nikandrov. The Sting would have another opportunity near the end of the period, but strong defensive play kept the score at 2-1. Martin continued to stand strong, making a number of flashy glove saves amidst a couple of loose puck scrums.

Mississauga came out strong in the third looking to get the equalizer. Despite numerous chances, Sarnia's goalie Justin Fazio was up to the challenge, keeping the Steelheads at bay. With time winding down, penalty troubles hindered the Steelheads attack. Sam Babintsev had the best opportunity to tie the game; however his shot could not beat the post. With the goalie pulled, Sarnia kept the puck out of their zone holding onto the 2-1 victory as time ran out. Sarnia earned their first victory of the season improving their record to 1-3-1-0 while the Steelheads dropped their first of the season to put their record at 2-1-0-0.

The Steelheads will visit Kingston on Friday for their first road game of the season, before returning to the Hershey Centre on Monday, October 13th for some Thanksgiving Day hockey!
