Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Scott Burt's goal with 17 seconds left in the game tied the score at 5 forcing the second shootout in as many games between the Idaho Steelheads and the San Diego Gulls. A sold out crowd of 5,307 watched Idaho come from a 3-goal deficit to win the game 6-5 at the Bank of America Centre.
Though the Steelheads had a two-man advantage midway through the first period, they couldn't capitalize. The first goal of the game went to San Diego. R.J. Enga passed the puck out to Sylvian Deschatelets who patiently stick handled it in front of the crease and put it past Cugnet at 18:10 (Cory Cyrenne also got an assist.) The period ended with the Gulls up by one goal.
Only 29 seconds into the second period Mark Pederson got one up and over Cugnet's shoulder to give the Gulls a two-goal lead. Mike Garrow and Dean Tiltgen recorded the assist. Thirty-three seconds later San Diego went up by three goals when a turnover in the Steelheads end gave Kevin Grant an easy shot (Cyrenne, Enga). Idaho finally got on the board at 2:09 with a power play goal scored by Joe Rybar from Marty Flichel and Dan Shermerhorn. The Steelheads closed the gap to within one when Scott Burt made a nice pass to Shermerhorn who blasted a slapshot off Koenig's glove. Ben Keup also assisted on the tally. Clayton Read tapped in San Diego's fourth goal of the night on a shot by Garrow at 9:48 (Tiltgen). Then, with a one-man advantage Dampy Brar lifted the Steelheads to within one-goal again. Scott Swanson, who leads all defensemen in points, recorded an assist on the goal, as did Flichel. The second period ended with shots on goal in favor of Idaho at 24-14, but the score was 4-3 for San Diego.
In the final frame, the Gulls scored the first again. The goal by Enga, assisted by Cory Cyrenne and Deschatelets, got Cugnet pulled from the game. At 1:32 of the third period with the score 5-3 in San Diego's favor, Blair Allison was brought in to face the unrelenting Gulls' offense. Allison came through, shutting down every attempt including a breakaway by Deschatelets, and the Steelheads got the boost they needed. The Steelheads scored at 8:13 on a beautiful pass by Shermerhorn to Swanson who got it to Copeland. Copeland sent a wrister past Koenig and closed the gap to within one for the third time of the game. Then Burt came through with some heroics with the tying goal, assisted by Swanson and Rybar.
