Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals rode a strong second period to a 6-3 win over the Rockford IceHogs on Saturday night, scoring four unanswered goals in the middle frame before 4,032 fans at the Coach USA Center.

Kenzie Homer got the game off to a good start for the IceHogs, scoring just 3:53 into the game on the power play to put his team up 1-0. Glenn Stewart answered back for Elmira at 11:25 of the period, putting a shot in off the thigh pad of Rockford goaltender Brant Nicklin to tie the game at 1-1. Mike Hofstrand and Aaron Phillips picked up the assists. Elmira out shot Rockford 13-8 in the first period, but the IceHogs appeared to have more quality scoring chances overall.

The second stanza would belong to the Jackals, however. Four straight goals in the period ignited the crowd and the team, starting at 3:48 when Eddy Lowe took a pass in the slot and chipped it in over Nicklin. David Lessard and Mike Thompson grabbed the helpers on the goal. Then Stewart scored his second of the night from Phillips and Hofstrand at 6:45. Phillips would get into the goal scoring mania when he one-timed a laser from the slot through the five hole of Nicklin to make it 4-1. Randy Murphy set up the power play goal from the corner after taking a cross-ice pass from Glenn Stewart, feeding a wide-open Phillips at the hash marks at 12:17. The scoring finally ended in the second when Lowe netted his second goal of the game, deflecting an R.C. Lyke shot from the point into the net for a 5-1 lead. Mike Thompson also picked up an assist on the goal.

To the IceHogs' credit, they came out hard in the third period. Right out of the gate at 1:33, Steve Cygan scored to put Rockford back in the game at 5-2. Brad Wingfield would finally manage to stem the tide for the Jackals, however, scoring at 12:05 from Murphy and Ryan Esselmont to make it 6-2. Rockford tried for one last gasp when Eric Wendell scored at 17:20, but the game would get no closer than the 6-3 final.

Marco Emond was once again solid in net for the Jackals, stopping 19 of 22 Rockford shots for the win, while Nicklin ended up stopping 30 of 36 Jackal shots in the loss. The Jackals will finish out their weekend against the Quad City Mallards with a 4 pm Sunday matinee at the Coach USA Center. Tickets are still available through the Coach USA Center Box Office and all Ticket Master locations, online at www.TicketMaster.com, or charge by phone at (607) 722-3711.
