Jackals Beat Mallards With Solid Effort At Home

February 1, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals kicked off a three game home stand in convincing fashion this weekend, defeating the Quad City Mallards 4-2 on home ice before 4,008 fans Friday night.

Elmira got things going at the 6:13 mark of the first period when Brad Wingfield wristed a shot past Quad City goalkeeper Jeff Raynaert. Randy Murphy and Aaron Phillips picked up the assists to boost Elmira to the 1-0 lead. J-F Dufour scored his fifth of the season at 11:24 to even things up from K.C. Timmons and Patrick Nadeau. The first period ended 1-1, with Quad City firing eight shots at Marco Emond, while Raynaert faced six from Elmira shooters.

The second stanza saw no scoring, but some spectacular goaltending through the first three-fourths of the period as both Raynaert and Emond stood on their head. Finally, it was Rob Guinn breaking through for Elmira at 15:26 with his second goal of the year from Wingfield and Ryan Esselmont. The period would end with the Jackals up 2-1 despite some challenges from the Mallards, but Emond was playing one of his best games of the season, stabbing two shots with the glove during one particularly difficult section of the middle frame.

In the third, Elmira opened up a 3-1 lead when Justin Plamondon scored his first goal as an Elmira Jackal after being added to the roster earlier in the day. Murphy and Wingfield provided the help on the goal, as Emond continued to shine for the Jackals. With just over two minutes left in the game, Mallard Head Coach Paul Gillis pulled Raynaert in an attempt to jump start his offense, but Aaron Phillips made him pay with an empty net goal at 18:00 from Glenn Stewart and Mike Hofstrand. A late power play goal by Quad City with 00.4 seconds left to go in the game gave Dufour his second goal of the night from Mike Possin and Lubos Velebny, but Elmira skated off with the 4-2 victory.

Emond stopped 30 of 32 shots for the win, while Raynaert blocked 31 of 34 shots in taking the loss. Wingfield lead the Jackals with a goal and two assists, while Murphy and Phillips recorded two point nights for Elmira. The Mallards finished 1 for 6 with the man advantage, while Elmira went 0 for 3.

The Jackals remain in third place heading into the final two games of the home stand, with every club except Flint picking up two points Friday. Elmira returns to action Saturday night against the Rockford IceHogs at 7 pm. Limited seats are still available for that game through the Coach USA Center Box Office starting at 10 am. Then Quad City will return to the Coach USA Center for a 4 pm Sunday matinee game, their last appearance for the remainder of the season.
