Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The largest crowd of the season (5,230) welcomed the Idaho Steelheads back to town from a seven-game road trip and saw them beat the Long Beach Ice Dogs 7-2 at the Bank of America Centre Friday night. Idaho's netminder Jason Cugnet, who leads the league in wins, improved his record to 22-9-1 with his 21 stops.

Idaho continued its domination of Long Beach this season, outscoring the Ice Dogs 37-19 in eight games played, and extending their series lead to 6-0-2.

The first goal of the game came from Derek Paget who scored on his own rebound at 3:16 of the first period. Rory McDade and Adam Copeland recorded the assists. Idaho would tally the only other goal of the period at 7:20 when Scott Swanson scored on Long Beach's B.J. Boxma with a slapshot from just inside the blueline. Assists came from Paget and Joe Rybar.

Long Beach scored their only goals of the game in the second period. The Ice Dogs capitalized on their first power play opportunity of the game at 4:23 when Jamie O'Leary scored from the point on a pass from former Steelhead Michal Pinc to pull within one. Next, Rybar slipped one over Boxma's skate to give the Steelheads the 2-goal lead once again. A.J. Begg and Martin Vasut each got a point on the tally. Idaho increased their lead by 3 goals when Dan Shermerhorn scored his 13th of the year with a bullet on a pass from Marty Flichel at 8:22. League-leading goal scorer Flichel put the Steelheads up by 4 goals with his 24th of the year, an unassisted goal at 12:44. Boxma was pulled and Mike Buzak was brought in to finish out the game. Long Beach Captain J.P. O'Connor answered back less than two minutes after Flichel's goal with a slapshot to put the game at 5-2 in favor of Idaho.

The Steelheads added another goal just 46 seconds into the third period, this time against Buzak. Petr Suchanek scored on pass from Rybar. Cory Morgan also got an assist on the goal. Idaho's seventh and final goal of the night came again from Suchanek at 14:51 with Shermerhorn and Morgan getting the assists.
