Second Place On The Line This Weekend

January 24, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Just two points separate the San Diego Gulls and Bakersfield Condors for second place in the West Coast Hockey League. Steve Martinson and company would love to extend that lead, but Kevin St. Pierre and the Condors may have something to say about that in this weekend's head-to-head battle.

The Gulls remain the hottest club in the WCHL, winners of four straight and 16 of their last 18. They come into this weekend's games with 49 points, two more than Bakersfield, but 10 behind the Idaho Steelheads, who host the Long Beach Ice Dogs Friday and Saturday nights.

San Diego just came off a weekend massacre of the Anchorage Aces, outscoring them 16-5 in the two-game set. The line of Sylvain Deschatelets, R.J. Enga and Cory Cyrenne combined for 26 points during those games. Deschatelets, reigning WCHL player of the week, has 11 points (3g, 8a) in his last three games. Cyrenne and Enga each have eight points (3g, 5a) in his last two.

Enga is now tied for third all-time with 184 WCHL goals. He's tied for eighth with 244 assists and sixth with 428 points.

Bakersfield has been red-hot as well, winners of five straight, thanks in large part to St. Pierre. The Condors' netminder has allowed six goals in four games since returning from a groin injury. St. Pierre is second in the league in goals against average (1.96), and first in save percentage (.935).

Jason Ralph has led Bakersfield offensively during its five-game run with 11 points (2g, 9a). Veteran Paul Willet remains the team leader with 45 points (14g, 31a), tied for third in the WCHL. His 31 assists are second in the league.

The Gulls and Condors have met eight times this season, with San Diego holding a 5-3-0 series edge. The Blue and Orange have won two of three at Centennial Garden and lead the all-time series match up with a 74-12-4 record. The two teams meet five more times in the regular season, including tomorrow night.

All games can be heard live on 1130AM-KSDO and at www.ksdo.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show broadcasts live every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on wsradio.com with Tera Black and Jeremy Zager hosting.
