Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads closed out the 2015-16 regular season this Sunday afternoon with tilt against their division rival, the Niagara IceDogs. A win today would see the Steelheads take on the North Bay Battalion in the first round of the OHL Eastern Conference Quarter Finals, while a loss would land them in seventh for a first-round matchup against the Barrie Colts. The latter was the end result as the IceDogs shutout the Trout 3-0 to secure fourth place and home ice-advantage in their first round series against the Ottawa 67'S.

With a lot riding on this game, both teams came out with high energy in the opening frame. The IceDogs and Steelheads both had power play opportunities, but defense was the story in the first as neither team could find the back of the net after twenty minutes of play.

The IceDogs capitalized on the man-advantage early in the second to take a 1-0 lead as Jordan Maletta and Blake Siebenaler set up Johnny Corneil for his 20th of the season. In the second half of the period, Niagara added an insurance marker as Brendan Perlini fired a one-timer from the point to put the IceDogs up 2-0. Maletta and Siebnaler drew their second assists of the night on Perlini's 25th of the season. A minute later, the IceDogs would capitalize again on the power play as Pavel Jenys scored his 15th of the season to give Niagara a comfortable 3-0 after two periods of play.

The Steelheads fought hard to cut the deficit in the third, but Stephen Dhillon stood tall to preserve the IceDogs' 3-0 lead, earning his first OHL career shutout.

Mississauga will kick off their playoff journey this Thursday in Barrie. Be sure to pick up your tickets for when Mississauga returns home for Game 3 on Tuesday, March 29th.
