Idaho Steelheads News Release

SAN DIEGO, California – The Idaho Steelheads dropped a 5-2 decision to the San Diego Gulls before 6,891 at the Sports Arena Saturday night. The loss evens the three-game series at one game apiece heading into Sunday evening's finale. Idaho won Friday night 3-1, handing San Diego its first loss on home ice.

San Diego jumped out on top with two unassisted first-period goals. Evgueni Nourislamov tallied his first of the season at 9:14, and Sean O'Connor notched his first of the season and the first of two on the game less than four minutes later.

After a scoreless second period, San Diego stretched the lead to 3 goals when Birbraer beat Idaho goaltender Frank Doyle with his third of the season at 4:29. Idaho finally got on the board 28 seconds later when Ben Keup got one past San Diego netminder Trevor Koenig off an assist by Lance Galbraith. The Gulls answered back 2:09 later, when the puck took a favorable bounce off the glass and came right to O'Connor in the slot and he buried his second of the game to give the Gulls a 4-1 lead. Sylvain Deschatelet just 46 seconds later gave San Diego a 5-1 advantage. The goal ended Doyle's night, and he was replaced in net by Colin Zulianello. Idaho's Dan Vandermeer converted a power play at 15:16 of the final period to end the scoring.

Doyle suffered his third loss of the season as his record falls to 10-3-1. Koenig stopped 32 of the 34 Idaho shots he faced and improves his record to 6-3-2.
