Brampton Steelheads News Release
Mississauga, ON - The Steelheads welcomed the London Knights to the Hershey Centre Sunday afternoon as they made their one and only visit to Mississauga this season. The Trout entered today's game riding a three-game win streak after wins against Sudbury, Hamilton and North Bay respectively. The Knights came in with losses in two of their last three games, including a 4-2 loss at the hands of the Kitchener Rangers Friday night. The last time this two played at the Hershey Centre was nearly a year ago on November 30th as Everett Clark recorded a hat-trick in a 6-2 Steelheads win. This was an intriguing match-up as it saw the league's best power play (London) face off against the league's best penalty kill (Mississauga).
Both teams were flying from the start of the period as each team looked to grab momentum with the first goal of the game. Michael McLeod looked to have given the Steelheads that momentum but Knights goalie Tyler Parsons made an incredible cross crease pad save to rob McLeod and keep the game scoreless. However, as a Knights defender went to clear the puck out of the zone, Stephen Gibson would intercept it and wired a slapshot through the wickets of Parsons to give the Trout the 1-0 lead. The goal was Gibson first tally of the season. The lead would not last long for the Steelheads though as Aaron Berisha would follow up on his own rebound and slide one by Jack Flinn for his 13th of the year to tie the game up at 1-1. Later in the frame, after Stefan LeBlanc was sent to the box for hooking, Christian Dvorak would take the Mitch Marner pass and split the defencemen and made no mistake on the breakaway as he put a backhand by Flinn for his 16th of the season to make it 2-1 Knights. 58 second after Dvorak's, Chris Martenet would set up Matthew Tkachuk for a breakaway of his own as he put his shot blocker side pass Flinn to give London a 3-1 lead. As the period began to wind down, Stephen Gibson would fire an innocent wrist shot from the point that got by a screened Tyler Parsons for his second of the game, as well as the season to cut the Knights lead to 3-2, heading into the second period. Stefan LeBlanc and Michael McLeod recorded assists on the goal. Shots in the period were 15-14 Knights.
The Trout would tie up the game at threes 5:38 into the frame with some good fortune as Michael McLeod's shot would bounce off Tyler Parsons, hit off the leg of a Knights defenceman and into the net for McLeod 8th of the season. Alexander Nylander and Nathan Bastian would draw assists on McLeod goal. McLeod and Bastian extended their point streaks to six games while Nylander extends his to five with the assist. The Knights would regain the lead just over two minutes after the Steelheads tied it up as Victor Mete would score his second of the year with a wrist shot from the point to give the Knights a 4-3 lead. The goal was London's second powerplay goal of the afternoon. The Knights would strike for their third powerplay goal of the game as Matthew Tkachuk would score his second of the game and 10th of the season after a back door pass from JJ Piccinich to give the Knights a 5-3 lead. London would continue to pile it on as 14 seconds after Tkachuk's second, Cliff Pu would receive the JJ Piccinich pass and fire it by Flinn to extend their lead to 6-3. The Steelheads would shorten the Knights lead to 6-4 heading into the third period as Owen Tippett would snipe one top corner on Parsons for his 7th goal of the year and his 5th in five games. Jake O'Donnell and Everett Clark assisted on Tippett's tally. Shots in the period were 17-9 Knights, 32- 23 London total.
The Steelheads looked to mount a third period as they have done so in the past to keep their win streak alive. However, after Daniel De Sousa was sent off for roughing, Matthew Tkachuk would return the favour to JJ Piccinich as fed him in the slot for his 15th of the season to give the Knights a 7-4 lead and their 4th powerplay goal of the game. London would again capitalize on the man advantage, this time on a 5 on 3 as Aaron Berisha would score his second of the game and 14th of the season to make it 8-4 Knights after his wrist shot from the top of the circle beat a screened Flinn. The Knights would extended their lead to 9-4 minutes after Berisha as Matthew Tkachuk would score London's sixth powerplay goal of the game and his 3rd of the contest as he put one over the left shoulder of Jack Flinn. Mississauga came close a few times to make it close but Tyler Parsons would stop everything he saw in the frame as the Knights defeated the Trout 9-4. Shots in the period were 19-11 Knights, 51-34 London for the game.
The Steelheads look to rebound as they finish up their six game homestand with a Friday night battle against Arizona Coyotes prospect Dylan Strome and the Erie Otters as they make their only visit to the Hershey Centre this season. Secure your tickets now by clicking on the link below!
