Saginaw Spirit News Release
SAGINAW, MI. - On Sunday afternoon, the Saginaw Spirit welcomed the Barrie Colts to The Dow Event Center for their second and final meeting of the season. Despite a two-goal performance by Dylan Sadowy and outshooting the Colts 42-37, the Saginaw Spirit fell to the Barrie Colts by a score of 5-3.
In the first period, the Barrie Colts opened the scoring on two goals within a matter of 16 seconds. The first goal came off the stick of Julius Nattinen, opening the game's scoring at 3:58 of the first period. Seconds later, Kevin Labanc buried the puck and beat Saginaw's goaltender Evan Cormier to put the Colts over the Spirit 2-0. The Spirit answered the Colts at 12:41 of the period after Mike Davies scored with the help of Artem Artemov and Keaton Middleton. Davies sliced into the Colts lead, pulling Saginaw within one goal of Barrie. Despite a 2-1 deficit heading into the first intermission, Saginaw outshot the visiting team 13-12 in the opening frame.
An early second period penalty on the Barrie Colts sent the Spirit to the power play. Despite the man advantage for the Spirit, Barrie's Kevin Labanc notched a shorthanded tally, reinstating the Colts two-goal lead. Before the midway mark of the period, Saginaw was granted a five-on-three power play, but was unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Just after the first Barrie penalty expired, Cordell James picked up the puck and netted another shorthanded tally to give the Colts a 4-1 lead. Saginaw's Dylan Sadowy put an end to the second period scoring after he fired home a rebound in the slot past Barrie's goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood. Greg DiTomaso and Blake Clarke assisted Sadowy's 10th goal of the season. Saginaw carried the play in the second period with an 18-16 shot advantage.
The Spirit and Colts turned in a fairly even contest in the third period. Saginaw was looking to gain grounds against the Colts in hopes of tying the game before the final buzzer sounded. The Spirit were able to do just that, as Dylan Sadowy beat Blackwood to register his second goal of the afternoon, and 11th of the season. Kris Bennett and Devon Paliani were credited with the assists on the play. The Colts retaliated shortly and added to their lead, finishing the game's scoring at 18:08 of the third period. Brendan Lemieux scored the final goal for the Colts, giving them a 5-3 road win. Despite the loss, Saginaw outshot Barrie, 42-37.
