Steelheads Down Salmon Kings 5-2

Led by captain D'Arcy McConvey's three-point night, the Steelheads (9-3-0) downed the Salmon Kings (4-7-1) in front of 3,957 fans at the Saveon Foods Memorial Centre on Wednesday night.

The Steelheads struck early and often in the first period, as McConvey opened the game's scoring at 3:06 of the first period. Linemate Garett Bembridge and defenseman Jim Hakewill assisted on McConvey's seventh goal of the season. The goal marked the quickest goal scored by the Steelheads to open a game in an opponent's building this season.

At 8:04 of the frame, defenseman Jonathan Zion made it 2-0 in favor of the visitors. Zion moved deep into the Salmon Kings zone and fired a snap shot low to the far post, beating goaltender Rob Muntain. Fellow defenseman Jeremy Mylymok drew the only assist.

Just 52 seconds later, the Salmon Kings got on the board as they converted a turnover in the Steelheads defensive zone. Forward Seth Leonard was the recipient of the errant clearing attempt and he beat Steelheads netminder Matt Yeats for his third goal of the season.

Victoria native Mike Stutzel answered for the visitors at 10:06 of the first period, making the score 3-1. Stutzel got to a centering feed from McConvey and beat Muntain top shelf for his sixth of the year. Zion added the other assist, as he picked up his fourth multiple point outing of the season on the goal. With his assist, McConvey registered his sixth multiple point effort.

The first period ended at 3-1 with the shots 13-11 in favor of the Steelheads. It also signaled the end of Muntain's night, as Lance Mayes replaced him between the pipes for the final two periods.

The two division foes traded goals in the middle stanza, with the Salmon Kings scoring first. At 3:11 of the period, Pete Gardiner scored for the home team. However, that is as close as the Salmon Kings would get. Steelheads defenseman Jarad Bourassa notched his first of the season, on the power play at 5:01 of the period to extend the lead to 4-2. Forward David Bararuk and Hakewill chipped in the assists. Hakewill's two assists are the first helpers of his professional career, while his two-point evening his first multiple point game this season. With the man advantage goal, the Steelheads have now netted a power play goal in nine straight games.

There was only one goal in the third period, as Bembridge iced the game with 4:24 left in regulation, with his team-leading eighth goal of the season. The even-strength marker was assisted by McConvey. Bembridge is currently tied for the team lead with McConvey with six multiple point games this season.

The visitors out-shot the Salmon Kings 30-23 for the contest, while improving to 4-2-0 in West Division play. Goaltender Matt Yeats earned his sixth win of the season for the Steelheads, making 21 stops in the victory.
