Brampton Steelheads News Release

The Steelheads complete their three-win weekend with a 3-2 victory over the Sarnia Sting at Paramount Fine Foods Centre. An all-around effort was needed with goals by defenceman Thomas Harley and Ryan Wells and a stellar performance in goal from Jacob Ingham.

Sunday's first period against the Sarnia Sting may have been the Trout's lowest-scoring opening frame of the weekend but James Richmond's team went to the locker room happy. Ryan Wells' third of the year put the Steelheads up 1-0 at the 3:21 mark of the first. The defenceman snuck down to the left-hand circle and rookie James Hardie found him with an inch-perfect pass. Wells made no mistake, roofing the puck on Sarnia goaltender Ethan Langevin. The Steelheads shook off an early penalty to Liam Ham and it was Jacob Ingham who stood tall in goal, finding the puck amongst a crowd of legs in a goalmouth scramble; Sarnia's best opportunity to get on the board in the first period.

The story of the second was Steelheads goalie Jacob Ingham, the netminder showing off the skills that led to the LA Kings selecting him in the sixth round of last year's NHL Entry Draft. Ingham made 10 saves in the second stanza to keep the Steelheads ahead by one, the most memorable coming on Anthony Tabak who snuck between two Steelheads defenders for a partial break before Ingham stopped him with the blocker. Ingham was lucky twice as Sean Josling had a puck bounce over his stick on what looked like a sure-goal, that play was immediately followed by Nick Grima's effort that dinged off the post. The Sting would eventually break through with rookie scoring leader Jacob Perreault roofing a puck off a Jamieson Rees pass that Ingham nearly got to late in the second. The score wasn't even for long as Cole Carter popped up in front of the Sting's goal and deposited an Alan Lyszczarcyzk pass into the roof of the net, restoring the Steelheads one-goal lead and taking the sting out of Sarnia's late equalizer.

If the first two wins of the weekend showed off the Steelheads ability to outscore their opponents, the final period of Sunday's game demonstrated their ability to hang on in a close one. Thomas Harley recorded the Steelheads lone goal of the period that came on a five-minute power play after Marko Jakoljevic was assessed a major penalty for a hit to the head of James Hardie. The goal came quickly into the Steelheads time on the man-advantage as a faceoff win by Cole Carter was quickly swept across to Harley on the point who walked in and wired a slapshot high past the glove of Ethan Langevin. Langevin would keep the Sting in it with a glove save on James Hardie who shook off the earlier hit by Jakoljevic and put a nice forehand-backhand move on the goalie but was denied by a desperate glove. The game wasn't quite in the books just yet as a late Mitch Eliot goal made the score 3-2. A hooking penalty on Nick Isaacson late meant that the Steelheads were down 6-on-4 for the final 1:05. Some nice defensive work by Nick Mchugh eventually iced the victory as his pass-breakup with five seconds left put an end to Sarnia's sustained pressure.

GM James Richmond said of his new faces - "We're on top of pucks, we need to clean up the D zone but I like the structure, I like the effort from them."

Jacob Ingham turned aside 27 of 29 shots in the win. Of his goalie's performance that earned him second star of the game - "That's Jake's best game in a long time, we know he has that level of play."

Keean Washkurak who tallied 2 assists in the win said of the mood in the room - "All the boys are pumped, it's good for our young group to get three wins in a row and come back from the weekend we had last weekend."

The new-look Steelheads completed a perfect weekend by proving that they could win a close one, scoring a goal in each frame and limiting the Sting to only two goals on the day. The Steelheads next opportunity to get the fourth win on the trot comes next Friday at home against the Barrie Colts.

Sunday's game was a success both on and off the ice. The game being the Steelheads 7th annual Bell Let's Talk game, a big thank you to all the fans who helped us raise awareness and contributed to stopping the stigma. The official Bell Let's Talk day takes place on January 31st.
