Steele's Gem Not Enough in 2-1 to Loss to Goldeyes

GARY, Ind. - A season-high 6.2 innings from Keaton Steele and a 1-0 lead after an inning of play wasn't enough for Gary in the series opener on Monday night at U.S. Steel Yard against Winnipeg as the 'Cats fell to the Goldeyes, 2-1. Gary has now lost back-to-back games and five of their last six, however, remain in first place in the North Division with St. Paul losing to Sioux Falls on Monday.
Gary had the tying run on second and base and the go-ahead run on first base in the bottom of the ninth after Andy De Jesus and Cole Fabio each reached with two outs against Winnipeg starter Mitchell Lambson. Goldeyes manager Rick Forney then elected to grab his closer Victor Capellan from the bullpen to face Alex Crosby with runners on first and second. Capellan (20) made quick work of Crosby after striking out the first baseman on three pitches to end the game and pick up the save.
Steele (4-4) retired the first 10 he faced and set a single-game American Association record for most putouts by a pitcher in a game with four on the night. The right-hander was charged with his second straight defeat after yielding two runs on five hits, walked none and struck out three. Lambson (8-3) yielded one run on six hits, walked four and struck out five over 8.2 innings in the win. The southpaw was also an out away from his league-high-tying third complete game.
Gary (45-34) took the opening lead of the series with their only run on three straight singles with one out in the first. Tillman Pugh recorded the first hit of the night and extended his on-base streak to 26 games with an infield single. Randy Santiesteban then gave the 'Cats runners on the corners with an opposite-field single before Colin Willis brought home Pugh with an RBI single down the right field line. Willis' RBI single also increased his season-and-career-high on-base streak to 30 games.
Winnipeg (35-46) took the lead for good with a pair of two-out runs in the sixth. Josh Romanski recorded the Goldeyes second hit with a two-out opposite-field single before Reggie Abercrombie moved Romanski up to second to second with his second single. Tucker Nathan followed with a two-run single to right-center wall, plating both Romanski and Abercrombie.
Gary continues their three-game series and six-game, seven-day homestand vs. the back-to-back American Association Champion Winnipeg Goldeyes on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. RailCats LHP Jeff McKenzie (4-9, 4.68) opposes Goldeyes RHP Alex Boshers (3-8, 5.29) in the middle game of the series.
Tuesday's contest is Bishop Donald Hying's Birthday Bash, supporting the Mercy Fund, and another CHN and Taco Tuesday. Taco Tuesday features $2.00 beef tacos and $5.00 margaritas (21 and over).
