Wichita Wingnuts News Release

CLEBURNE, Tex. - The Wichita Wingnuts became the first team in the American Association this season to sweep the league's weekly honors, as Angel Reyes and Travis Banwart were selected as Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Since joining the Wingnuts via a trade with the Lincoln Saltdogs on July 31, few hitters on the circuit have been better than Reyes. The utility man has posted a .412 batting average, pounding five home runs and driving in 16 runs over the course of 12 games. For the week of August 6-12, Reyes went 11-for-26 (.423), smacking three doubles and two home runs. The native Venezuelan scored eight runs and drove home ten more over that stretch.

Reyes has recorded a hit in each of the 12 games since suiting up for the Wingnuts, currently riding the team's longest hitting streak. He has multi-hit games in eight of those contests. Last night against the Cleburne Railroaders, Reyes tied a Wingnuts season-high with five RBI and three runs scored, helping Wichita to a 13-6 win.

Banwart has been consistently among the best starters in the league all season, currently with the best ERA among active starters in the American Association. The former Wichita State Shocker is 6-3 with a 2.49 ERA in 16 starts, and his last outing was perhaps his best. Facing the league's best offense in the Sioux City Explorers, Banwart fired eight shutout innings while allowing only three hits. He struck out seven and walked just one, earning the win in a 3-0 Wingnuts victory. It was the second start of eight scoreless frames on the NBC World Series road trip for Banwart, having first done so against the Sioux Falls Canaries on July 28.

These honors are the third and fourth weekly awards for the Wingnuts this season; Charlie Gillies snagged Pitcher of the Week on June 18 and Tony Thomas was selected as Player of the Week on July 16.

Banwart will make the start for Wichita tonight as the Wingnuts wrap up their series with the Railroaders; Cleburne will counter with lefty Michael Gunn (3-5, 4.03). First pitch from The Depot at Cleburne Station is scheduled for 7:06 PM, and will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM KGSO, TuneIn and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
