Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
GARY, IN - The Winnipeg Goldeyes beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 2-1 at US Steel Yard on Monday night.
Goldeyes' starter Mitchell Lambson (8-3) picked up the win, allowing one earned run on five hits in eight and two-thirds innings. Lambson walked four, struck out five, and has pitched into the seventh inning or later in seven consecutive starts.
With the Goldeyes trailing 1-0 in the top of the sixth, Josh Romanski lined a single to left with two outs. After Reggie Abercrombie singled through the left side, Tucker Nathans crushed a two-out, two-run double to right-centre that gave Winnipeg a 2-1 lead.
With the tying run on second in the bottom of the seventh, Abercrombie made a sliding catch in shallow centre field to rob Cole Fabio of a potential game-tying hit.
After working a scoreless eighth, Lambson retired the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth. Andy DeJesus extended the game with a full count single to centre, and the RailCats put the winning run on base when Fabio drew a five-pitch walk. Victor Capellan relieved Lambson and struck out Alex Crosby on three consecutive fastballs to earn his 20th save of the year. Capellan becomes just the fourth pitcher in franchise history to record 20 saves in a season, and is now just two shy of the club record of 22 set by Oscar Montero in 2004.
Colin Willis singled home Tillman Pugh with the game's first run in the bottom of the first.
RailCats' starter Keaton Steele (4-4) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on five hits in six and two-thirds innings. Steele walked none and struck out three. Steele had retired 16 of the first 18 batters to face him before Romanski's two-out single in the sixth.
The series continues Tuesday night at 7:10 p.m. Alex Boshers (3-8, 5.29) takes on left-hander Jeff McKenzie (4-9, 4.68). All the action can be heard locally on 93.7 FM CJNU and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
The Goldeyes return home on Friday, August 17th when they host the Sioux City Explorers. Tickets for all Goldeyes' home games are on sale now by visiting www.ticketmaster.ca/Goldeyes, or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the box office at Shaw Park.
