Steel Earn 3-2 Shootout Win over Dubuque

GENEVA, ILLINOIS - The Chicago Steel (7-0-3-0; 17 pts.) captured a 3-2 shootout win against the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Saturday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena, matching the longest start-of-season point streak in Steel history with their 10th consecutive games without a regulation loss.

Chicago remained unbeaten at home (4-0-0-0) behind a 32-save performance from netminder Nick Haas and goals from Joe Miller and Jayden Perron before Miller and Adam Fantilli scored in the shootout to seal the victory.

The game was scoreless until the final three minutes of the first period. The Steel power play came through as Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Joe Miller powered home a one-timer past Fighting Saints netminder Paxton Giesel to give the Steel a 1-0 lead.

The power play tally gave Chicago its ninth consecutive game with a marker on the man advantage.

Halfway into the middle frame, Dubuque knotted the game at 1-1 on a power play of its own. Fighting Saints forward Stephan Halliday buried his third goal of the year on a tic-tac-toe passing play.

After outshooting Dubuque in the first period 11-4, the Fighting Saints turned the tables and outshot Chicago 16-8 in the second period.

The Fighting Saints took their first lead of the evening with a marker from forward Nikita Borodayenko halfway through the third period. The Dmitrov, Russia, native tucked home a Ryan Beck pass just moments after the Steel killed off their fourth penalty of the evening.

Steel rookie forwards Casy Laylin and Jayden Perron connected for the equalizer with just over seven minutes to play. Perron blistered home his fourth goal of the season on a one-timer, taking a feed from Laylin off the offensive rush.

Steel netminder Nick Haas stood tall for the Steel throughout the game and especially in the third period and extra frame. Haas stopped 10 third period shots and turned away all three Dubuque chances in the extra frame, forcing a shootout.

In the first round of the shootout, Miler scored a wrister between the legs of Geisel before Ryan Beck evened the score for Dubuque in the third round.

After a save from Haas, Steel forward Adam Fantilli let go a wrister that beat Giesel, giving the Steel the shootout win.

Chicago hits the road for three games in three days next weekend. The Steel face Team USA (U18) for a pair of 6:05 games on Friday, Oct. 29 and Saturday, Oct. 30 before heading to Ohio for the first meeting of the season with the Youngstown Phantoms on Sunday, Oct. 31, a 3:05 pm CT start time.
