Four-Goal 3rd Period Propels Capitols to Sixth Straight Victory

Madison Capitols News Release

The Capitols trailed three separate times this evening and erased every single one of those deficits. However, it was the 3rd period effort from the Caps that stole the show.

Madison netted two goals in the opening 40 minutes from forwards Tyler Haskins and Jack Musa. The Capitols and Lumberjacks were deadlocked at two apiece heading into the final 20 minutes of regulation.

6:17 into the 3rd period, Muskegon would take its third lead of the night to go up 3-2 on Madison. Once again, the Capitols answered the challenge of coming from behind. In a span of 6:19, the Caps found the back of the net four times to bury the Lumberjacks.

Captain Jack Horbach got things rolling when he tapped in the equalizer off an awkward Blake Dangos shot from the point. What happened next was truly special. Capitols forward Jake Dunlap scored a pair of goals just 13 seconds apart to give the Capitols a 5-3 lead with 6:03 left in regulation.

"Finley changed and I got on the ice. Luke Mittelstadt made a good breakout pass to me and I used my speed to get to the net and tucked it 5-hole," Madison Capitols forward Jake Dunlap said about his first goal. "Then on the second one, [Kyle] Kukkonen won a battle below the net, threw it out front and good things happen when you get pucks to the net. Good team win tonight."

Nathan Lewis, who has been no stranger to finding the back of the net lately, buried an insurance goal to seal the Capitols sixth consecutive victory. Lewis is on a 4-game goal scoring streak.

"Obviously the boys did a great job of finding a way to win," Madison Capitols head coach Tom Upton said. "We battled hard, we came back, our special teams I thought was excellent tonight and our goaltending was great. We scored goals and showed our skills."

The Capitols will try to make it seven in a row in tomorrow night's series finale against the Lumberjacks. Puck drop at 7:05 p.m.
