Quad City Steamwheelers News Release

(Green Bay, Wis.) - The Quad City Steamwheelers dropped 2-5 overall after a 40-35 loss to the Green Bay Blizzard in front of 6,234 at the Resch Center in Green Bay. The Steamwheelers had a chance to punch the ball in the endzone with the ball on the one-yard line, fourth down and just 12 seconds left on the clock. AJ Novak's rush fell just short turning the ball over to Green Bay and allowing them to run down the clock. The Steamwheelers, who never trailed until 5:31 left in the fourth quarter, jumped on the board first when Kris Peters caught an 11-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Tim Hicks just 1:57 seconds into the contest. The Blizzard tied the game two plays later when a 42-yard kickoff return by Luke Leverson set up a four yard run for Peter Lazare. With the game tied fullback Jeff Macrea gave the Steamwheelers a 14-7 lead when he scored his eighth rushing touchdown of the season on a five-yard run up the middle. Lazare scored his second touchdown of the night on a four-yard run when he stretched his arms out and pushed the ball across the goal line as he was being tackled. The extra point attempt (more) by Kyle Marotz missed and the Steamwheelers had a one-point advantage heading into the second quarter. In the second quarter Tim Dodge was credited with a five-yard rush to extend the Steamwheelers lead to 21-13. Dodge started towards the left side saw a wall of blockers and reversed directions and scrambled into the end zone. After the Steamwheelers defense held and forced a missed 23-yard field goal attempt from Marotz. The Steamwheelers had a chance to extend their lead to two possessions. With the team driving, Hicks dropped back to pass the ball at the five yard line. He didn't see defensive back Jermaine Petty of Green Bay waiting for the pass and when Hicks delivered, Petty stepped up, caught the ball and ran it 42-yards for the Blizzard touchdown. With the Steamwheelers clinging to a 21-20 led Hicks found Dodge on the left side. Dodge caught the ball at the two-yard line and rolled into the endzone for 28-20 lead with just 13 seconds remaining before halftime. Green Bay started the second half with a 32-yard strike from former Steamwheeler quarterback Ronnie Gordon. Gordon, who finished the game with 175 yards and one touchdown pass, hit Holmes as he was streaking down the sideline. With 2:14 seconds remaining in the third quarter AJ Novak scored on a three yard draw play on the right side. With the Steamwheelers holding a 35-37 advantage to start the fourth quarter, Gordon took over the game scoring the next to touchdowns on a 13-yard rush with 13:38 remaining in the (more) quarter and the go-ahead score on a one-yard run with 5:31 seconds remaining. Hicks finished the game for Quad City with 288 passing yards and two touchdown passes. Peters was the leading receiver registering 147 yards on 10 catches.
