Memphis Xplorers News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Memphis Xplorers of af2 have made several roster moves as the team prepares for its Week Eight match-up with the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings this Saturday night at the DeSoto Civic Center at 7 p.m.
On Thursday, the Xplorers were assigned three rookies and activated one from the Short-Term Injured Reserve List. Assigned to the team by the league office were: OL/DL Brian Smith from Mississippi Valley State; FB/LB Tyus Jackson from Memphis; and WR/DB Jonathan Lyles from Appalachian State. OL/DL Maurice Troutman, who was activated off the Other League Exempt List two weeks ago, was activated from the Short-Term IR.
To make room for these additions, the Xplorers waived FB/LB Jermaine Beale, WR/DB Daryon Brutley, WR/DB Domonique Dunbar and WR/LB Tommy Manus.
Smith, 6-4, 260, is a native of Nashville and wrapped up his college career playing defensive end at Mississippi Valley State in 2005. His senior season was cut short as he played just two games, but he did pick up two sacks and five tackles in those two games. Smith finished with 14 sacks in his four years with the Delta Devils including a team-leading 7.5 in his junior season of 2004.
Jackson, 6-3, 250, is a native of Birmingham, AL and closed out his college football career playing defensive end the past two seasons with the Memphis Tigers after completing two campaigns at Northeast Mississippi Community College. In 2005, Jackson collected one sack and had 13 total tackles. He also had a sack and 13 total tackles during the 2004 season. He played in all 24 games during his two seasons with the Tigers.
Lyles, 6-0, 170, played cornerback at Division I-AA Appalachian State and at Division II Newberry College. In 2004 at Newberry, Lyles led the South Atlantic Conference with eight interceptions and was First Team All-SAC.
Add these changes to the return of Kevin Prentiss earlier this week and the Xplorers will have five new players available for this Saturday's game compared to last week's roster. The Xplorers are 5-2 and host the 0-6 Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings Saturday night at 7 p.m.
