Edenton Steamers News Release
MOREHEAD CITY, NC - Edenton (16-7) turned a two run lead into a six run lead, scoring four times in the top of the seventh to blow game two open and cruise to a 8-2 victory over the Morehead City Marlins (9-16) to split their double header at Big Rock Stadium on Sunday.
Game Two featured the right-handed pitcher Kevin Bibler (Southern Polytechnic State University), making his first start of the season facing off against the left-handed pitcher Ben Fuchs, who made his eighth appearance and second start overall for Morehead City.
Game two started with some déjàvu for the Steamers when they scored two times in the top of the first against Fuchs. Jason Kanzler (University of Buffalo) led off with an infield single and Koby Kraemer (Indiana State University) laid down a beautiful bunt that he beat out for a hit. Madison Beaird (Arkansas Tech University) took a walk to load the bases and Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) hit an RBI fielder's choice to give Edenton a 1-0 lead. The very next batter, Blaise Fernandez (George Mason University) knocked in Kraemer with a double and the lead was 2-0 Steamers.
Ryan Cranmer put the Marlins on the board in the bottom of the first with a solo home run, his fifth of the season, against Bibler and it was 2-1 Steamers.
In the bottom of the second Eric Peterson led off with a single against Bibler. Drew Woodall was hit by a pitch and Brandon Bass sacrificed both runners up 90 feet. Geoff Degroot followed with an RBI single scoring Peterson and tying the game 2-2.
The score remained 2-2 until the top of the fifth when the Steamers reclaimed the lead. With one out Kraemer doubled and scored on Beaird's RBI single to give Edenton a 3-2 lead. That spelled the end of the night for Fuchs. He pitched 4.1 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk. He added four strikeouts as well. Evan Zerff came into the game and Matt Anderson the third baseman for Morehead City committed an error that allowed Beaird to score from second base and give Edenton a 4-2 lead.
Bibler's night was done after five innings pitched. He allowed two runs (both earned) on six hits and he struck out three. He departed in line for his first win of the season. Right-handed pitcher Travis Huber (University of Nebraska) came into the game and despite issuing two walks in the bottom of the sixth did not allow the Marlins to score and the score remained Steamers 4, Marlins 2.
Edenton scored some insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning off Marlins relief pitcher Raphael Guerrero. Kanzler singled to start the inning and then moved to second on a Kraemer bunt. Kanzler stole third and came home on Camporeale's sacrifice fly to make it 5-2 Steamers. Beaird and Fernandez both walked and then completed a double steal to move up to second and third. The Marlins went to their bullpen and brought in AJ Goetz. Wes Meadows reached on an error that scored Beaird from third and pushed the lead to 6-2. Spencer Branigan followed with a double that brought home both Fernandez and Meadows to blow the game open at 8-2 Steamers.
Right-handed pitcher Jordan Egan (Norfolk State University) came into the came in the bottom of the seventh to close out the 8-2 victory for Edenton. Egan issued one walk but retired the next three batters to close out the 8-2 victory for the Steamers. Bibler earned his first win of the season, improving to 1-0 and Fuchs took his first loss of the season, falling to 1-1.
