Marlins Take First, Drop Second Against Steamers

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins (9-16) and Edenton Steamers (16-7) split a double-header Sunday evening at Big Rock Stadium, as the Marlins took game one by a score of 4-3 before the Steamers came back to win game two 8-2.

In game one, the Marlins fell behind the Steamers 2-0 in the top of the first but came back quickly. After scoring one run in the first inning, Corey Bass launched a two-run home run to left field to give the Marlins a 3-2 lead.

Then in the fifth inning, Edenton scored on an RBI-single by Mike Camporeale to tie the game before the Marlins took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame on Chace Mitchell's RBI-double that scored Sal Annunziata to make the score 4-3.

Taylor Robinson (2-2) earned the win after facing just one batter in to end the fifth inning while William Prince earned his fourth save tossing a scoreless sixth and seventh inning. Justin D'Amato (2-1) suffered his first loss, allowing four runs on six hits in five innings.

Game two began the same way as game one, with the Steamers plating two runs in the first and the Marlins countering with one run on a solo home run by Ryan Cranmer. The Marlins evened the score in the second inning on an RBI-single by Geoff DeGroot.

However, the Steamers took the lead for good in the fifth inning on a one-run single by Madison Beaird and a one-run error to hold a 4-2 advantage before tacking on four insurance runs in the seventh to close the scoring at 8-2.

Kevin Bibler (1-0) notched the win, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings while Ben Fuchs (1-1) took the loss on four runs (three earned) in 4 1/3 innings of work.

The Marlins are back in action Wednesday night as they host the USA National Team in an exhibition game. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. as Matt Sutor has the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.

Notes: The home run was Cranmer's fifth of the summer... William Prince celebrated his 20th birthday... Sam Ott recorded his first outfield assist, throwing out a runner at home plate in game one... Matt Wainman walked three batters in game one, marking the first batters he has walked all season.

The Morehead City Marlins is a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league.
