Edenton Steamers News Release

MOREHEAD CITY, NC - Trailing 4-3 in the top of the sixth of a seven inning contest the Steamers had two runners thrown out at the plate and lost their second game in a row to the Morehead City Marlins at Big Rock Stadium on Sunday.

In a rematch of the pitching match-up from June 9th in Edenton left-handed pitcher Justin D'Amato (St. John Fisher College) made his fourth start of the season for the Steamers against lefty Matt Wainman of the Marlins in game one of the double header.

Edenton jumped out all over Wainman in the top of the first inning, scoring two times on two hits. Koby Kraemer (Indiana State University) drew a one-out walk and scored on Madison Beaird's (Arkansas Tech University) RBI double for a 1-0 Steamer lead. Two batters later Blaise Fernandez (George Mason University) hit an RBI single to score Beaird and put Edenton up 2-0.

D'Amato retired the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the first before Sam Ott singled. Sal Annunziata hit an RBI double down the left field line that scored Ott and cut the lead in half to 2-1 Steamers.

In the bottom of the second, after a scoreless top half for the Steamers, Corey Bass hit his first home run of the season that scored Drew Woodall, who walked and gave Morehead City a 3-2 lead.

Edenton, in the top of the fifth, tied the ball game on a lead off bunt single by Jason Kanzler (University of Buffalo). Kraemer sacrificed Kanzler to second base and Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) singled Kanzler home to knot the game at 3-3. Wainman was lifted in the top of the fifth and pitched 4.2 innings. He allowed three runs on six hits and three walks; he added two strikeouts and did not earn a decision. Tyler Robinson came on and finished the fifth inning for the Marlins.

Morehead City scored the go ahead and eventual game winning run in the bottom of the fifth against D'Amato. A two-out walk to Sal Annunziata was followed by an RBI double by Chace Mitchell and the Marlins reclaimed the lead 4-3.

In the top of the sixth the Steamers had runners on first and third with nobody out after a walk and an error by the Marlin defense. DJ Johnson (Mercer University) hit a hard ground ball to third and Drew Woodall threw home to put out Wes Meadows (Otterbein University). Robbie Zinsmeister (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) hit another ground ball to third base and Woodall tagged Spencer Branigan (University of Pennsylvania) for the second out of the inning and then Kanzler singled and the right fielder Sam Ott threw out Johnson at the plate to end the inning.

The Steamers never threatened in the seventh against William Prince, who earned his fourth save of the season giving Robinson the win in relief. Robinson improved to 2-2 and D'Amato took his first loss of the season, he is now 2-1.

Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 51 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
