
Steamers Defeat Rival Pilots, 12-4

HAMPTON, NC - Jordan Egan, in his first start for Edenton pitched seven innings of one-run ball in the Steamers 12-4 victory over their North Division rival Peninsula Pilots. Edenton's offense set a season high with 18 hits, improving to 9-1 in the second half.
The Steamers took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first against Austin Chrismon, the Pilots starting pitcher. A lead-off walk followed by three straight singles gave Edenton their first run of the game. Adam Giacalone picked up the RBI single. Two batters later, Mitch Wells drew an RBI walk and Kevin Whitehead was hit by a pitch to drive in the third run of the inning.
Egan sent the Pilots back to the dugout in order in the bottom of the first.
Peninsula cut the lead with a run in the bottom of the third with two outs Jake Cave singled and Jared King drove him in a with a double to make it 3-1 Steamers.
In the top of the fourth Edenton struck gold again against Chrismon. Edenton got a single from Joey Wendle, who logged another three hit game. Brian Blasik reached on an error that moved Wendle to third. Zach Stewart legged out an infield single that scored Wendle to make it 4-1 Steamers. Nathan Burns hit his third home run of the season, a three run shot that went over the left field wall to blow the game open, 7-1 Steamers. Burns, with that home run, has driven in 14 runs in the last six games for Edenton.
Edenton brought home another four runs in the top of the fourth off of Chrismon. Two singles and an error loaded the bases for Joey Wendle, who knocked in two with his tenth double of the season to give the Steamers the 9-1 lead. Two batters later Zach Stewart joined the hit parade with a two-run double and it was 11-1 Steamers.
Chrismon didn't survive the fifth inning. His final line in the loss was 4.2 innings pitched, allowing 13 hits, 11 runs, eight earned; he walked three and struck out three. He fell to 3-3 on the season.
Two relievers held the Steamers scoreless in the sixth, seventh and the eighth and the Pilots added two runs in the bottom half of the eighth against David Teasley. A one out walk, followed by a single and another walk loaded the bases for Tristan Moore. Moore lined a single into left field that scored two runs and cut the lead to 11-3 Steamers.
Egan pitched fantastic in his first start of the season. He pitched seven innings of one run baseball. He allowed only four hits, he issued two walks and struck out seven to earn his first win as a starter and move to 2-0 on the season.
Edenton added an insurance run in the top of the ninth against Tristan Moore, who was making his first appearance in 2011. With two outs the Steamers picked up three singles in a row and then Moore hit Mitch Wells to push home Giacalone and make it 12-3 Steamers heading to the bottom of the ninth.
Dustin Quattrocchi pitched the ninth for Edenton and he allowed one run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Zach Price who scored Steve Hodgins to make it 12-4 Steamers.
With the win Edenton improves to 28-9 overall and 9-1 in the second half. Peninsula falls to 20-17 overall and 3-6 overall.
The Edenton Steamers compete during the summer at Historic Hicks Field in downtown Historic Edenton, North Carolina. Heading into its 15th season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. The CPL has had over 930 alumni drafted and 44 alums make their Major League debut thus far.
