Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers (28-12, 10-4) scored twice in the bottom of the second inning on Blaise Fernandez's two-run home run and the pitching staff, led by starter Josh Dexheimer allowed just three hits in the 4-0 win over the Martinsville Mustangs (15-26, 6-7) on Monday at Historic Hicks Field.
For Fernandez (George Mason University) the home run was his fourth of the season and he picked up RBIs number 24 and 25 with the long ball that gave Edenton the early 2-0 lead.
The Steamers added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on a Jason Kanzler (University at Buffalo) RBI infield single that scored Spencer Branigan (University of Pennsylvania) after he walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt single and third on a groundout. The run made it 3-0 Steamers.
In the bottom of the sixth Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) picked up his 31st RBI of the season with a one out double that scored Koby Kraemer (Indiana State University) to make it 4-0 Steamers. Camporeale, with his 31 RBIs leads the Coastal Plain League.
It took the Mustangs until the fourth inning to pick up their first hit, a double; off of Josh Dexheimer (Point Loma Nazarene Univeristy) who retired the first nine Mustangs he faced to begin the ball game. Dexheimer pitched five innings and allowed no runs on two hits and two walks; adding two strikeouts. He earned his first win as a Steamer, improving to 1-0.
Four Steamer pitchers, including Dexheimer, pitched a shut-out against Martinsville allowing only three hits and five walks in the ball game.
Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) had his third consecutive three hit night on a day when he found out he was named the CPL Rawlings Hitter of the Week for week seven of action. The home run by Fernandez increased the Steamers league leading total to 36 on the season, just six shy of tying their franchise record of 42 in a season set in 2009.
The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 53 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
