Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports scored in five straight innings on Friday night and in doing so, earned their season-high fourth straight victory. The Ports withstood a late San Jose Giants rally and hung on for a 6-4 win at Banner Island Ballpark.

Oakland A's right-hander Sean Manaea started the game for Stockton on a Major League rehab assignment and was delivered an early blow. With one on and one out in the top of the first. C.J Hinojosa hit a two-run homer to right field to give the Giants a 2-0 lead.

As it turned out, the Hinojosa home run would be the only runs allowed by Manaea, who did not factor into the decision. He went three-and-two-thirds innings and allowed two runs on two hits while walking two and striking out three. He threw 65 pitches, 37 for strikes.

Stockton was unable to score in the first three innings off Giants starter Mark Reyes (6-2). In the fourth, however, B.J. Boyd, who went 4-for-5 on the night, hit a solo home run to open the inning and make it a 2-1 ballgame. Reyes would go on to issue three walks in the inning to load the bases with one out, but got Seth Brown to strike out and Argenis Raga to fly out to right to escape further trouble.

The Ports would score in every inning after the fourth. Stockton tied the game in the fifth on a one-out RBI single by Joe Bennie. With runners at the corners and one out, Reyes was able to induce an inning-ending double-play ball off the bat of John Nogowski to prevent the Ports from taking the lead.

Stockton did take the lead and knock Reyes out of the game in the sixth. With Sandber Pimentel at first base and one out, Brown lined a single to right field. Pimentel went from first to third and drew a throw from right fielder Steve Duggar that wound up in the third base dugout, an error that awarded Pimentel home plate and put Brown at third. Reyes was then lifted from the game for Jose Morel, who allowed a sac-fly to Argenis Raga that gave Stockton a 4-2 lead.

Reyes suffered his second loss of the season, going 5.1 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits while walking four and striking out six.

Morel gave up a run in the seventh on a one-out RBI double by Bennie that increased the Ports lead to 5-2. Pat Young took over in the eighth and, with the bases loaded and one out, allowed a sac-fly to Richie Martin that extended the Ports lead to 6-2.

Brett Graves (3-6), Stockton's regularly scheduled starter who came on in relief of Manaea, pitched around a bases loaded, one-out jam in the fifth, a leadoff walk in the sixth, a leadoff single in the seventh and back-to-back one-out hits in the eighth to keep San Jose at bay. In the ninth, with runners at second and third and two out, Graves gave up a two-run single to Hinojosa that cut the Ports lead to 6-4 and brought the possible-tying run to the plate in Chris Shaw. Koby Gauna (SV, 1) was summoned from the bullpen and, after walking Shaw, got Jonah Arenado to pop out to second base to end the ballgame and notch his first save of the season.

Graves earned his first win since April 30th, going five innings and allowing two runs on six hits while walking four and striking out three.

Winners of four straight for the first time all season, the Ports will look to make it five straight victories in the third game of their four-game set with San Jose on Saturday night. Left-hander Matt Stalcup (2-0, 6.06 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Giants right-hander Jason Forjet (6-5, 4.36 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
