Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA-- The High Desert Mavericks put 18 hits on the board on Friday evening, earning their first win of the second half, as the Quakes dropped a 10-4 decision, in front of more than 3,800 fans at LoanMart Field.
Friday's game was not only ugly on the scoreboard, as the Quakes were outhit 18-5, but the game was marred by a benches-clearing incident that saw a player from each club get ejected.
The Mavs jumped on Quakes' starter Tommy Bergjans (2-8) in the first, putting up two runs on four hits, as Luke Tendler and David Lyon each had run-scoring hits, giving the Mavs a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Bergjans and reliever Luis De Paula got knocked around for six runs, as the Mavs took a comfortable 8-0 lead. The inning started with a home run from Travis Demeritte, his league-leading 19th, as the Mavs took a 3-0 lead. Jairo Beras capped the inning with a three-run shot off De Paula, his tenth of the year and second in as many games of this series, putting High Desert up 8-0.
Rancho finally got to Mavs' starter Adam Quintana (3-3) in the fifth, as Julian Leon blasted his fifth homer of the year, while Devan Ahart clubbed a two-run double, getting Rancho back in the game, at 8-4.
De Paula opened the sixth inning by hitting Demeritte, as the benches cleared and tempers flared. De Paula and Mavs' third baseman Juremi Profar were both ejected after the dust-up.
The Mavs added one in the sixth and another in the eighth, taking control at 10-4. The High Desert bullpen didn't allow a single base-runner over their four innings of work, as the last 13 Quakes went down in order.
Rancho (1-1, 43-29) will send Grant Holmes (5-3) to the hill on Saturday, as he'll be opposed by High Desert's Collin Wiles (2-3), with first pitch slated for 7:05pm.
Saturday is another Fireworks Night, as everyone will enjoy a post-game Fireworks Display, thanks to Massage Envy. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
