Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - The Lake Elsinore Storm scored a run in the top of the ninth inning to knock off the JetHawks 5-4 and even the series on Friday night at The Hangar.
Two key mistakes in the field came back to bite Lancaster, leading directly to a pair of unearned runs for the Storm. Lake Elsinore also committed three errors in the contest.
The JetHawks took the game's first lead in the opening inning when Bryan Muniz and Ramon Laureano executed a double steal of second and home with two out in the frame. Lake Elsinore responded with the first of its unearned runs in the top of the second. Franmil Reyes led off with a double and came around to score with two out. Reyes would go on to record the game-winning RBI single with two out in the top of the ninth.
Lancaster took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Antonio Nunez, the first of his three singles in the game. Once again, the Storm responded immediately to tie the game when Michael Gettys delivered an RBI ground out in the third.
The JetHawks took a 4-2 lead with two runs in the fourth. Bobby Boyd had an RBI bunt single and Garrett Stubbs followed with an RBI double.
Javier Guerra brought the Storm within a run on his solo homer in the sixth, his seventh long ball this season. Lake Elsinore tied the game in the seventh after Franchy Cordero doubled with two out and scored on a fielding error by JetHawks second baseman Aaron Mizell.
Josh James started for Lancaster and went six innings for the second straight time. The right-hander allowed six hits, three runs (two earned), walked three, and struck out three. Kevin Comer (1-2) took the loss in relief for the JetHawks. He surrendered two runs (one earned) in three innings of work.
Lancaster catcher Trent Woodward departed with an injury in the top of the third inning and Stubbs, the JetHawks only other active catcher, had to move behind the plate from his designated hitter spot. As a result, Lancaster pitchers recorded three at-bats in the game. James went 0-for-2 and Comer was 0-for-1.
Brandon Alger (2-0) earned the win for Lake Elsinore with an inning and a third of perfect relief. The JetHawks put a runner on first with two out in the ninth after a Storm error, but Phil Maton worked a scoreless frame to pick up his second save.
The JetHawks (35-36) and Storm (33-39) continue their four-game series on Saturday night at The Hangar. Trent Thornton (3-3) will start for Lancaster against Enyel De Los Santos (1-2). First pitch is 6:05 p.m.
