Stateside, Spirit Host Breakers on Opening Day of the 2015 World Cup

BOYDS, Md. (June 5, 2015) - The Washington Spirit (4-3-1, 13 points) have their second game in a row at home against the Boston Breakers (3-3-1, 10 points) on Saturday, June 6th. It will be a closely contested affair as the Boston Breakers have held opposing teams to one goal in each of their last three games, and are looking to jump from third place to second place in the standings. However, the Washington Spirit will look to continue their unbeaten streak at home. (GAME NOTES)

"Our focus this weekend is to continue improving and keep our momentum," said head coach Mark Parsons. "We are pleased with our performance against Portland, but we know there is more and we are determined to show that this weekend."

The Boston Breakers played the Portland Thorns FC (2-3-2, 7 points) on Saturday May 16th, and won the game with a score of 1-0, having eleven shots to the Thorns' five shots on goal. On May 30th, the Spirit played the Thorns and had eleven shots on goal compared to the Thorns' three.

The Washington Spirit have built momentum in the midfield with Laura del Rio and Amanda Da Costa beginning to be constant threats as they push further up in support of forward Crystal Dunn. Del Rio has had nine shots on goal in the last six games. Her versatile skill and vision for the game allow her to beat opposing players and serve threatening balls into the box. Da Costa, who scored her first goal on May 30th, is showing steady progress and there is no doubt opposing teams keep an eye on her in their defensive third.

Amateur goalkeeper Lyndse Hokanson was called up for Saturday's match to replace Emily Lillard who is returning to Miami for injury treatment. Lillard will not return this season. Hokanson recently graduated from George Mason University and recently started coaching at Georgetown University.

The Boston Breakers, being undefeated at home, travel to the Maureen Hendricks Field extend that winning streak to the road. They will look to forwards Kristie Mewis and Stephanie McCaffrey to continue their scoring streak and be an offensive threat. The Boston Breakers have a solid defensive line with their goalkeeper, Jami Kranich only allowing four goals in her four games she has started for the Breakers.

With the World Cup break just around the corner, the Spirit look to stay focused and confident as they head into the game against the Boston Breakers, in order to secure three points.
