Boston Breakers News Release

HANOVER, Mass. (June 5, 2015) - The Boston Breakers look to extend their unbeaten streak Saturday night as they head to Maureen Hendricks Field in Boyds, Md. to take on the Washington Spirit at 7 p.m. ET.

The third-place Breakers (3-3-1) currently are in the midst of a three-game unbeaten stretch, securing two wins and a draw in their last three matches. In their most recent action, the Breakers got a second-half goal from Kristie Mewis to beat defending NWSL champions FC Kansas City, 1-0, in front of a season-high crowd of 3,176 at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium in Allston, Mass. Prior to that, the Breakers tied Sky Blue FC, 1-1, and beat Portland Thorns FC, 1-0. All games came at home, where the Breakers haven't lost since Aug. 3, 2014.

On the flipside, the second-place Washington Spirit (4-3-1) also boast a home unbeaten streak. The Spirit are 3-0 at Maureen Hendricks Field, securing wins over FC Kansas City (3-1 on April 18), Sky Blue FC (1-0 on May 16), and Portland Thorns FC (2-1 on May 30).

Led by the league's top scorer and two-time NWSL Player of the Week Crystal Dunn (six goals in eight matches), the Spirit also get a lift in the attacking third from Christine Nairn (four goals, two assists). The Spirit will be missing keeper Ashlyn Harris (U.S.), defender Ali Krieger (U.S.), midfielder Diana Matheson (Canada), defender Arianna Romero (Mexico), midfielder Veronica Perez (Mexico), and forward Francisca Ordega (Nigeria), who are all at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada. Despite the absences, the Spirit still pose a dangerous threat.

"Save Chicago, they are the in-form team at the moment. They've gelled into their system, and they are very fluid in their system. They've had a run of good form and a run of good fortune as well," Boston Breakers head coach Tom Durkin said. "They've been really fortunate not to concede on a number of occasions, and they have been fortunate as we were to catch a late goal to snatch a victory, so things have really been going their way, especially at home. I think it's going to be one of the harder matches we've had so far this season."

The Breakers look to grab their first road victory of 2015 Saturday night. They are 0-3-0 away from Boston, but since that stretch, the Breakers have only conceded one goal in their last three matches, a credit to the back line of captains Julie King and Kassey Kallman and outside backs Mollie Pathman, Rachel Wood, and Lauren Lazo. After losing her first NWSL match May 9 at Chicago, goalkeeper Jami Kranich bounced right back and went 2-0-1 with nine saves and two shutouts in her next three games. She's the quickest keeper in Breakers franchise history to reach two shutouts this early into her career.

Following Saturday's match, the NWSL takes a near two-week break for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. The Breakers return to action on Sunday, June 21 at 4 p.m. ET to take on Seattle Reign FC at home. They remain at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium the following three games, hosting the Western New York Flash on Sunday, June 28 at 5 p.m. FC Kansas City on Thursday, July 9 at 7 p.m., and the Chicago Red Stars on Wednesday, July 15 at 7 p.m.
