Staten Island FerryHawks News Release
CENTRAL ISLIP, L.I. - After a tough last-inning loss Friday night, the Staten Island FerryHawks took the field Saturday night for the second of a four-game weekend series looking for a bounce-back Atlantic League win against the Long Island Ducks.
The FerryHawks (17-38) scored plenty of runs, but their pitching failed them during an 8-6 loss that put the Ducks in first place in the North standings with a 33-24 mark as 7,005 people watched at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.
Trailing 6-5 late in the game, the Ducks pushed across three runs in the home seventh to pull out the victory.
The FerryHawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Kevin Krause, a Tottenville HS product, drove home Garrett Kueber on a sacrifice fly.
The Ducks came back in the bottom of the inning against FerryHawks starter Nick Beardsley, when Sam Travis hit his 10th home run of the year, a two-run shot to deep center field giving the Ducks a 2-1 lead. The Ducks extended the lead to 3-1 in the second inning on a Joe DeCarlo RBI single.
In the third, FerryHawks second baseman Garrett Kueber launched his third homer of the year, a solo shot over the left field wall.
But the Ducks returned the favor in the bottom of the inning when Chance Sisco hit a solo shot over the right field wall, his ninth of the year giving the Ducks a 4-2 lead.
The FerryHawks took 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on a Delbinson Romero sacrifice fly, a Matt Winnaker RBI groundout, and a Mikey Edelman double to centerfield.
The Ducks tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth on a Ruben Tejada's RBI single that scored Tzu-Wei Lin and ended the night for Beardsley.
Staten Island took a 6-5 lead in the top of the fifth when Kueber scored on Luis Castro's sacrifice fly.
The Hawks would hold the lead until the bottom of the seventh when Long Island touched up FerryHawk reliever Enrique Santana for three runs, highlighted by a two-run RBI double off the bat of Ducks third baseman Joe DeCarlo.
The Ducks took an 8-6 lead into the ninth when closer Kevin Quackenbush came in to close out the game and pick up his ninth save of the season.
Long Island reliever Jose Jose picked up the win (4-1) while FerryHawk reliever Enrique Sanatana (1-1) was charged with the loss.
