Staten Island FerryHawk Comeback Falls Just Short

YORK, Pa. - Wednesday was a beautiful summer night for baseball under the lights here at WellSpan Park as the Staten Island FerryHawks (16-36) went searching for a much-needed Atlantic League road win against the red-hot, first-place Revolution (31-22).

But the local pro team wound up suffering a tough 6-5 loss.

The Atlantic League's first half ends July 7 and York is fighting for the first-half title in the North Division.

York hit the scorebooks first, jumping out to a three-run lead in the third on a Tomo Otosaka RBI single and an RBI double by Troy Stokes Jr., his 12th of the season. York added a run in the fourth, bringing the lead to 4-0.

In the top of the fifth, Staten Island came back when right-fielder Luis Castro stroked a double to center, scoring Mikey Edelman and opening the scoring for the FerryHawks. York responded in the bottom of the inning by adding another run on a Jacob Rhinesmith RBI single.

York had a 5-1 lead heading into the top of the seventh, but the Ferryhawks weren't planning on going away quietly. Staten Island bounced back with two runs in the seventh inning and another in the eighth, on RBI singles from Matt Winaker and Kevin Krause, closing the gap to 5-4.

In the bottom of the eighth, Alejandro Rivero took a 1-1 pitch from Staten Island reliever Alex Katz deep over the left field wall for his sixth homer of the year, a solo shot which brought the York lead to 6-4.

Staten Island closed the gap in the top of the ninth when Brandon Pugh brought home Garrett Kueber on a sacrifice fly to right. But the comeback wasn't in the cards for Staten Island as York was able to walk away with the win.

FerryHawk starter Ryan Hartman went five innings giving up seven hits, three walks and striking out three while surrendering five runs, four of which were earned. Blake Loubier pitched two scoreless innings of relief, giving up only one hit and striking out one while walking no one.

The two teams meet again Thursday night in the final matchup of the series before Staten Island heads to Long Island to kick off a weekend series against the Ducks.
