State College Spikes News Release

-SPIKES END SET IN AUBURN TONIGHT: The Spikes finish up a two-game series with the Auburn Doubledays tonight. It is their fifth and final matchup at Falcon Park this year, with two more games to come between the two teams at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to end the Spikes' home slate. Auburn leads the season series, 5-2. State College is 4-8 all time at Falcon Park.

-LAST NIGHT: Auburn's Bartolo Nicolas delivered a game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth to complete a come-from-behind victory over the Spikes at Falcon Park. The Doubledays were down, 3-1, entering the ninth inning. Andy Vasquez hit his fifth home run of the year, a solo shot over the right field fence, to put State College on the board. After delivering an RBI double to give the Spikes the lead, Jeremy Farrell then homered to left-center for his first official home run as a professional to give State College a two-run lead in the eighth. But Auburn then scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth for the win.

-TONIGHT'S SPIKES STARTER: Kyle McPherson gets the ball for State College tonight. The right-hander started game two of the doubleheader against Jamestown on August 26th, going four innings and allowing two runs on three hits while striking out four. His best start of the season came on June 26th at Auburn, where he went a season-long six innings and allowed just one run while striking out three. Tonight is McPherson's seventh start in 2008.

-TONIGHT'S DOUBLEDAYS STARTER: Josh Wells takes the mound for Auburn tonight. The 6'7" right-hander from Australia makes his 15th start. Wells faced the Spikes back on June 28th, allowing three runs on eight hits over 5.1 innings to get the win. While he has allowed right-handed hitters a .269 average, lefties are touching up Wells for a .338 average. In his last start, Wells shut out Williamsport for seven innings to get the win.

-FARRELL GETS ONE IN THE COLUMN: Jeremy Farrell's solo home run in the eighth inning last night was his first official home run of the year. Farrell had a home run against Lowell in the game that was started on July 23rd but never completed, so his homer was washed out.
