Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Washington Nationals announced on Sunday that they expect to call up six players from Triple-A Columbus when Major League rosters expanded on September 1st, including former Vermont Expos pitcher Michael Hinckley for the first time in his career and making him the 52nd former Vermont plaer to reach the Major Leagues.

Hinckley had one of the best seasons ever by a Vermont pitcher back in 2002 when he led the New York-Penn League and set a Vermont record with a 1.37 ERA. In 16 starts with the then-Expos, Hinckley was 6-2 and allowed 19 runs (14 earned) on 60 hits with 30 walks and 66 strikeouts in 91 2/3 innings, which is the 6th-most innings thrown by a Vermont pitcher in a season.

After his year at Vermont, the left-hander was a combined 13-5 with a 3.24 ERA in 2003 at Single-A Savannah and Brevard County before going a combined 11-4 with a 2.77 ERA at Brevard County and Double-A Harrisburg in 2004. A third-round selection of the Montreal Expos in 2001, Hinckley had the honor of throwing the first-ever Spring Training pitch in Washington Nationals history in March of 2005.

But then Hinckley struggled during his next three Minor League seasons, going 3-9 with a 4.93 ERA in 2005 and 6-8 with 5.52 ERA in 2006 for SIngle-A Potomac then 9-10 with a 5.83 ERA for Harrisburg in 2007. After beginning the 2008 season with Harrisburg, Hinckley went 0-2 with one save and a 3.16 ERA in 20 games for Triple-A Columbus to earn a promotion to the Nationals bullpen during September.

Along with becoming the 52nd former Vermont player to reach the Major Leagues all-time, Hinckley will also be the 18th in the Major Leagues during the 2008 season.
