-SPIKES CONTINUE ROAD TRIP IN HUDSON VALLEY: The State College Spikes, who are still number one in the New York-Penn League in ERA at 2.52 and 1 1/2 games back of the Pinckney Division lead, continue a six-game road trip tonight with the second of three matchups against the Hudson Valley Renegades. The Spikes' 14-11 record is second-bast behind Jamestown, while Hudson Valley is second by percentage points in the McNamara Division. The Renegades hold the lead in the all-time series, 12-9, and the two teams have split the ten games at Dutchess Stadium, 5-5.
-LAST GAME: The Spikes battled back from two deficits to send the game to extra innings, but Hudson Valley pulled out a 7-6 win in the tenth inning on Saturday night at Dutchess Stadium. Hudson Valley's Granden Goetzman helped bring in the winning run in the bottom of the last frame as he laid down a bunt single, with an ensuing throwing error by State College reliever Jhonny Polanco allowing Oscar Hernandez to score and end the game. The Spikes fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and trailed 6-4 after five, but found a way to erase the Renegades' advantage each time. Ronald Castillo delivered two hits, including a double, and three RBI. Steven Ramos notched his second three-hit game in three nights for State College.
-O'SHEA HEADS TO THE HILL FOR SPIKES : Left-hander Ben O'Shea makes his fifth start of the year tonight for State College. O'Shea has been effective for the Spikes, with his only loss coming on July 2 vs. Williamsport when he allowed four runs over five innings. Last time out, the Reading, MA native and Tampa, FL resident made the longest outing of his career, going seven innings and yielding three runs while striking out three in a win over Mahoning Valley. On the road this year, O'Shea is 2-0 with a 3.18 ERA.
-RENEGADES GO WITH GRIFFIN ON THE MOUND: Right-hander Aaron Griffin gets the ball tonight for his fourth start of the season and seventh appearance with Hudson Valley. Last time out, Griffin went six innings and gave up one run on four hits while striking out three. The El Cajon, CA native was the Rays' tenth-round pick in the 2013 MLB Draft out of Loyola Marymount University, where he went 4-5 with a 3.07 ERA and a team-high 72 strikeouts over 88 innings this spring. Griffin was sixth all-time in LMU history in least walks per nine innings for his career with a 2.57 mark.
-SPIKES WIELDING BIG BATS IN 2013: The Spikes are among the New York-Penn League's leaders in a multitude of hitting categories, including a .280 batting average good for second in the league, 138 runs scored to place second in the NYPL, and a .413 slugging average to lead the loop. State College has compiled 13 games with 10 hits or more, including three in which the Spikes have exceeded 15 hits.
-SPIKE MARKS: Valera is 3rd in the NYPL in batting average (.337), T-3rd in doubles (9), T-5th in runs (17) and 4th in slugging (.539)...Jimmy Bosco is T-2nd in triples (4) and T-1st in runs (20)...David Washington is 1st in RBI (22), T-5th in doubles (8) & T-4th in homers (4)...Bruce Caldwell is 8th in batting average (.312), 2nd in on-base percentage (.421), T-1st in runs scored (20) and 3rd in walks (16)
