Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

NILES, OH --- The Lake Monsters hit a pair of home runs in the same inning for the second straight day, including a homer from Ryan Huck for the second consecutive game, and Boog Powell was 4-for-5 to extended his hitting streak to nine games as Vermont defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 5-1 in New York-Penn League action Sunday evening at Eastwood Field.

The Lake Monsters clung to a 2-1 lead when Huck led off the eighth inning with a home run to left field and Luis Baez followed three batters later with a two-run shot to left for a 5-1 advantage. It was Huck's second home run and Baez's first round tripper of the season.  The two home run inning came a day after B.J. Boyd and Huck had both homered in the fifth inning of Vermont's 6-3 win over the Scrappers.

Mahoning Valley had taken a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly in the second off Vermont starter Gregory Paulino, but the Lake Monsters tied the game on a Jaycob Brugman two-out RBI single in the third and a Tyler Marincov two-out RBI double in the fifth to score Boyd both times for a 2-1 lead.

Jerad Grundy (1-2) came on in relief of Paulino to start the third and allowed just two hits over four scoreless innings of relief to earn his first professional victory. Grundy and reliever Derek Hansen got in a bit of trouble in the seventh as a couple of walks put Scrappers on second and third with one out, but Hansen struckout Cody Ferrell and got Paul Hendrix on a groundout to preserve the one-run lead.

Sam Bragg struckout two of the three batters he faced in the ninth inning to close out the 5-1 victory. Lake Monster pitchers have now held their opponents to just one run in four of the last seven contests and 10 times in 27 games overall.

Powell had a single in four of his five at bats on Sunday to improve his batting average to .338 overall, including .516 (16-for-31) during his nine-game hitting streak.  Robert Whiteneck (1-4) allowed two runs on five hits over five innings to take the loss for Mahoning Valley (7-21), which has lost a franchise record 12 straight games.

Vermont (12-15) will look to complete its first three-game sweep of a series this season and close out a six-game roadtrip at Mahoning Valley on Monday night at 7:05 pm. After a scheduled off day on Tuesday, the Lake Monsters return to Centennial Field for a six-game homestand beginning on Wednesday at 7:05 pm against the Aberdeen Ironbirds.
