-SPIKES KEEP STRETCH RUN GOING AGAINST AUBURN: The State College Spikes come back home to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park as they seek to make tracks towards a second straight New York-Penn League Pinckney Division title. The Spikes welcome the Auburn Doubledays to town to conclude a two-game mini-series tonight. State College swept a three-game series at Falcon Park this past weekend. With 12 games remaining, the Spikes hold an eight-game lead in the division with, putting their magic number for a division title at five. The Spikes have won seven out of nine games against the Doubledays so far this year, including all five at Falcon Park. All-time, State College is 45-44 against Auburn with a 22-22 mark at home.

-LAST GAME: Chase Raffield missed a game-tying home run by mere inches as the State College Spikes fell shy of completing their late rally in a 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Auburn Doubledays on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Raffield's eighth-inning fly ball bounced off the right-center field wall just six inches below its top, resulting in a double that scored one run to make it a 5-3 game. State College had runners on second and third with no outs after the near-homer, but saw a runner picked off third base before an RBI groundout from Collin Radack finished the scoring.

The Spikes also loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth on three straight singles, but Raffield's flyout to left ended the game.

Luis Cruz collected three hits for State College, while Radack went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Robelys Reyes also produced two hits, incluidng a double, while Nick Thompson knocked in a run with a fifth-inning groundout.

-SPIKES GO WITH GOMBER TONIGHT: Left-hander Austin Gomber makes his ninth start as a professional for the Spikes this evening. Last time out, Gomber pitched three shutout innings against Mahoning Valley despite yielding three hits and four walks. The Florida Atlantic product struck out three in the outing, and stranded a total of six runners during his time on the mound. Gomber, the 2014 fourth-round draft choice of the Cardinals, is yielding just a .184 batting average with runners in scoring position despite allowing a .370 average to leadoff hitters in an inning.

-DOUBLEDAYS TAP VAN ORDEN FOR START: Right-hander Drew Van Orden makes his seventh start and ninth overall appearance for Auburn in tonight's game. Van Orden, the Nationals' 2014 fifth-round draft choice out of Duke, was roughed up by the Spikes for eight runs over 3 1/3 innings in a July 8 start at Falcon Park. However, the righty came back on July 26 to earn his first professional win with the Doubledays after five one-run innings against State College at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Van Orden has a 2.08 ERA in three August appearances after posting a 7.27 ERA in five July outings.

-SPIKES MAKE GOOD SHOWING AT NYPL ALL-STAR GAME: State College Spikes pitchers Will Anderson and Kyle Grana each tossed a scoreless inning on the mound for the South squad, and Spikes infielders Robelys Reyes and Darren Seferina each made contributions, but the New York-Penn League All-Star Game finished in a 1-1 tie on Tuesday night at MCU Park. Anderson recorded three straight groundouts in the second, while Grana allowed a hit and a walk, but no runs, in the eighth. Reyes went 0-for-2 after finishing the game at shortstop, while Seferina came on as a pinch-runner in the ninth and stole a base, but was stranded at third to end the exhibition contest.
