TROY, NY --- J.P. Sportman and John Nogowski both went 2-for-4 with an RBI double, while A.J. Burke allowed just one run on four hits over five inning to pick up his fifth win of the season as the Vermont Lake Monsters completed a two-game series sweep of the Tri-City ValleyCats with a 4-2 New York-Penn League victory on Thursday night at Bruno Stadium.
Sportman, who played high school baseball at LaSalle Institute located right next to Bruno Stadium, gave Vermont a 1-0 lead in the top of the third with an RBI single scoring Scott Masik. The ValleyCats tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a fielder's choice after loading the bases with one out. It was the only run given up by Burke (5-3), who allowed four hits with two walks and three strikeouts over his five innings to earn his first win since August 2nd.
The Lake Monsters scored a pair of runs in the fourth with the help of three singles. Max Kuhn led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a Nogowski singled before scoring on a Gabriel Santana RBI single. Nogowski, who advanced to third on the Santana single, then scored on a wild pitch for a 3-1 Vermont lead. Nogowski gave the Lake Monsters a three-run lead in the sixth with a one-out RBI double. Derek Fisher cut the Tri-City deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer off reliever Johnnie Massad.
Blake McMullen gave up just one hit over the final two innings to earn his first save of the season, while Kuhn scored two of the Lake Monsters four runs. Randall Fant (1-3) allowed three runs on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts to take the loss for Stedler Division-leading Tri-City (42-23), while Ariel Ovando was 2-for-2 with one run and Jason Martin added two hits.
