Stars Sweep Knights, 3-1
December 18, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Abbotsford Heat News Release
Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Stars snapped the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights road winning streak with a 3-1 win on Sunday night at Wells Fargo Arena. The Knights had won four straight road games prior to the trip to Iowa. The Stars won both ends of the home-and-home series, winning by the same score on Saturday.
After a scoreless first period, the Stars finally broke the deadlock. Kyle Brodziak beat a screened Brent Krahn with a shot that slipped just inside the near post. The goal was the first for the Stars against the Knights in more than seven periods of hockey at home.
Just 1:25 later, the Stars doubled their lead. While on the powerplay, Jamie Johnson took what looked like a harmless wrist shot from the blueline. But again, Krahn was screened and the puck found the net over his right shoulder. The Stars led 2-0 after two.
The Knights got a glimmer of hope with a powerplay early in the third period. They doubled their advantage when they called for a stick measurement and found that Yan Stastny was playing with an illegal stick. They cashed in of the five-on-three advantage when Dave Moss tipped in a shot by Richie Regehr for his ninth goal of the year.
But Junior Lessard of the Stars squelched all comeback hopes when he scored into an empty net at 18:03 of the third for the 3-1 win.
The Knights are now 13-13-0-6. The Knights do the Texas two-step in the upcoming week. They'll visit the San Antonio Rampage on Thursday, December 22nd at 7:00 p.m. and then head to Houston to face the Aeros on Friday at 7:35 p.m.
The Knights won't play at home again until December 30th when they host the Milwaukee Admirals at 7:00 p.m.
Tickets for all home games are on sale at the Civic Auditorium box office, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Sunday from noon through game time and at all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets may be purchased by calling 422-1212 or at Ticketmaster.com.
