Iowa Chops News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Stars welcomed the Peoria Rivermen to Wells Fargo Arena in Downtown Des Moines on Saturday evening. Despite rattling off three third period goals, Iowa succumbed to the Rivermen 5-4 in front of a crowd of 6,791.
For the fifth consecutive game the Iowa Stars surrendered the game's maiden marker. Former Iowa Stars Forward Yan Stastny game the Rivermen the 1-0 lead just :41 seconds into the game when he capitalized on an Iowa giveaway with a wrist-shot from the top of the slot. With Iowa on a power-play, the Rivermen jumped-out to a 2-0 lead. Able to slip behind the Iowa Defensemen, Michael Birner skated in alone on Iowa netminder Steve Silverthorn for a shorthanded goal at the 7:20 mark.
Peoria gained a 3-0 lead just 6:38 into the middle stanza. Peoria's Roman Polak, along with Trent Whitfield and Jon DiSalvatore crossed into the Iowa zone on a three-on-two and Polak fired a shot from the right circle the beat Silverthorn high for their third goal of the game. Iowa cut the lead to 3-1 with just under two minutes left in the period. Left Wing Janos Vas registered his seventh goal of the season at the 18:05 mark. Vas' goal came when he tipped Marty Wilford's shot from the right point for a power-play goal. Unfortunately for the Stars, Peoria was able to regain the three-goal lead with three seconds left in the period when Forward DiSalvatore potted his 11th of the season.
Tobias Stephan replaced Silverthorn to start the third period and shortly thereafter Iowa's Junior Lessard was unable to tickle the twine when he hit the post early in the third period. Vas closed the gap to 4-2 when he notched his second goal of the game midway through the third period. Taking a pass from Mario Scalzo, Vas fired a wrist-shot that sailed over Peoria Goaltender Marek Schwarz's shoulder. Vas now has four goals and five assists in his last 10 games: 10(4/5/9). Vojtech Polak made the score 4-3 when he came from behind the net and sent a wrap-around goal over the shoulder of a fallen Schwarz with eight minutes left in the third. Stastny regained the two-goal lead with his second goal of the game less than one minute after the Polak tally. Francis Wathier tipped a shot from Mark Ardelan to pull Iowa to within one with :17 seconds left in the third but the comeback was not in the cards for Iowa.
