P-Bruins Defeat Pirates 6-4

Portland, ME - The Providence Bruins defeated the Portland Pirates 6-4 Saturday evening at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The P-Bruins got goals from T.J. Trevelyan, Kris Versteeg, Pascal Pelletier, Jeremy Reich, David Krejci and Martins Karsums. Providence is now on a seven game point streak and has 48 points with a 22-18-1-3 record, only three points out of second place in the Atlantic Division.

The P-Bruins took a 1-0 lead at the 8:01 mark of the opening period, while on the power play. Portland turned the puck over in its own end and it landed on the stick of Trevelyan. From in between the circles he sent the puck past Pirates net minder Mike Wall and into the net. The goal was unassisted. Providence extended its lead by a goal at the 14:54 mark. As a power play came to an end, Versteeg got free in front of the net and backhanded the puck under the cross bar and into the net. Pelletier and Krejci recorded the assists. The Pirates cut the lead in half heading into the first intermission. On the power play, Tim Brent found himself open back door and took a pass from Matt Keith, putting the puck home into the net. Clay Wilson had the second assist as Providence went into the intermission with a 2-1 lead.

In the second period, the Pirates tied the game at two as their power play came to an end. At the 2:20 mark Keith scored with Brent picking up the lone assist. The P-Bruins answered back with three goals in the span of 1:34. The scoring started at the 10:07 mark, when Versteeg and Pelletier skated into the zone 2 on 1. Versteeg sent the puck to an open Pelletier back door as he sent the puck into the net. Nate Thompson tallied the second assist. Forty-nine seconds later Thomson cleared the puck out of the Providence zone send the puck to Nate DiCasmirro. He and Reich had a 2 on 1 and Reich scored on the pass from DiCasmirro. The P-Bruins wrapped up the second period scoring at the 11:41 mark. Trevelyan sent a pass to Karsums, who took a shot and missed wide. He grabbed his own rebound and buried the puck into the back of the Pirates net to send the P-Bruins into the second intermission with a 5-2 lead.

In the third period the Pirates pulled within two goals. At the 2:56 mark Zenon Konopka scored his 11th goal of the season with Keith and Brian Salcido grabbing the assists. The P-Bruins did not wait long to retake the three goal advantage. At the 4:05 mark Krejci and Pelletier had a 2 on 1 advantage with Krejci scoring the goal and Pelletier getting the assist. The second assist went to Versteeg. Late in the game Portland once again pulled within two goals as Chris Durno scored with an assist going to Aaron Rome, but that was a close as the Pirates would get as Providence held on for the 6-4 victory.

Jordan Sigalet stopped 39 of 43 shots he faced for the P-Bruins, while Wall made 10 saves and Dov Grumet-Morris made 6 saves for the Pirates. Providence was 1 for 4 on the power play, while Portland went 1 for 7 on the man-advantage.
