Stars Secure Point, But Fall Short in Shootout

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Lincoln Stars (10-17-2) forced extra time, but fell 3-2 in a shootout against the Sioux City Musketeers (15-17-1) at Tyson Events Center on Friday night. The Musketeers scored goals in the first period, propelling the home team to a multi-goal lead after 20 minutes.

Griffin Ludtke notched his first USHL goal at 8:37 while Matteo Costantini scored for the second time against Lincoln this season at 16:42. After the first period, Lincoln trailed in the shot totals 13-10 down 2-0.

The Stars killed off a massive 5-on-3 power play in the middle frame and eventually were rewarded for it with Noah Laba's fourth goal of the year at 19:37.

Clay Hanus and Cross Hanas were given the assists on Laba's third power-play marker in 2020-21. After two periods, Sioux City had 28 shots on goal; the Stars had 18.Hanus would notch a goal for the second consecutive game at 4:48 off a beautiful feed from Hanas. Laba was awarded the secondary assist on Hanus' second goal this season. The game would require overtime, despite some close calls for both sides.

In overtime, chaos ensued as the Stars and Musketeers exchanged odd-man opportunities at a frantic pace. Ryan Ouellette came up large with prime-time scoring chances from Carter Loney and Chase Bradley. In the shootout, Dominic James scored in the top of the second round, responding to Brian Carrabes' goal in the bottom of the first round.

Costantini eventually scored in the fifth round, giving Sioux City the extra point. Ouellette stopped 40 shots while Akira Schmid turned aside 27.

The Stars dominated the special teams battle, scoring twice on five power-play opportunities and killing four penalties on four chances.
