Iowa Chops News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Stars and the Houston Aeros met for the fourth time overall and the third time at Wells Fargo Arena this season on Thursday night. Despite registering 19 shots in the third period, Iowa lost for the first time this season to Houston, 3-2. Iowa looks to rebound against the Aeros with a 7 PM face-off Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Aeros grabbed the first goal of the game when Benoit Pouliot scored at 9:25 of the first period. With :49 seconds left in the opening period, Wyatt Smith scored his fourth of the season for a 2-0 Houston lead. Iowa was unable to find the scoresheet despite out-shooting the Aeros 14 to 5. It was also just the second time in 13 games that Iowa has trailed after the first period.
Benoit Pouliot registered his second of the game at 6:32 of the second period. The power-play goal came after Iowa Goaltender Tobias Stephan made a great right pad save but the defensemen were unable to control the rebound in front of the net. Just under 10 minutes later, the Iowa Stars made the score 3-1 when forward Joel Lundqvist scored. Lundqvist, positioned in front of the net, tipped a Mark Ardelan shot between the legs of Houston Goaltender Josh Harding for a five-on-three power-play goal.
Iowa's Loui Eriksson pulled the Stars to within one when he notched his fifth goal of the season at 12:06 of the third period. Eriksson took a cross-ice feed from Mario Scalzo and then fired the puck top-shelf over a flailing Harding. Iowa had several opportunities to even the score but Harding 'stood on his head' while Iowa fired a total of 19 third period shots. The third-year pro made numerous glove-hand saves, denying Iowa on would-be tying markers.
Iowa netminder Tobias Stephan faced just 16 shots in the loss. His record drops to 3-2-0.
